5: David Silva can’t wriggle through the gap on the left-hand side of the area and Jorginho arrives to clear the danger. First sight of Chelsea on the break with Eden Hazard travelling downfield and drawing a free-kick from Bernardo.

Laporte and Mahrez combine to clear the resulting set-piece.

3: Decent start here at the Bridge with Manchester City seeing the bulk of possession… what’s new? Chelsea look content to sit back and absorb the pressure. Obviously that makes the first goal absolutely crucial. Jeers from the home supporters as Fabian Delph hits a pass straight out of play.

CHELSEA 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

1: Right, two of the best sides in Premier League in a must-win game. What could be better?

No word on whether Alvaro Morata is injured, but he is here sitting with the Chelsea subs on the bench. It appears as though he has been dropped from the squad altogether. Not entirely surprising if you ask me…

Twitter round-up

Tom: This has got ‘classic’ written all over it. Two fantastic managers with great philosophies playing great football.

Xavier: I’m crazy nervous about this game, either we’re going step our game vs. Man City and give them game like Liverpool last year or completely fall apart and let up like 3 goals.

Lee Sykes: Is it me or is anyone else thinking that it will be either 7 goal thriller or a 1 goal with 0 strikers on the pitch.

Noel Fitzpatrick: Like all Liverpool fans I can sit back and relax and enjoy this one with my feet up!! And for me, I want a 1-1 draw…Wound two birds with the one stone.

Pep praise

17:20: Respectful discussion about other managers?! It’ll never last…

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he was impressed with the quick overhaul of Chelsea’s playing style under Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri has turned Chelsea from a counter-attacking side into high-intensity team with that can dominate possession and Guardiola said he was a fan of the Italian’s work.

“The job he has done so far, from my point of view, is excellent. Some people do not know how difficult it is to create a special way to play. You need time,” Guardiola said. “Maybe they are not playing 90 minutes but when they play good for 50, 60, 70, 75 minutes, they are excellent.”

Team news

17:10: Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri did not select a recognised striker against City at Stamford Bridge.

Eden Hazard expressed frustration at being asked to play as a ‘false nine’ against City under Antonio Conte, Sarri’s predecessor, but the Belgium forward, without a goal in 11 matches for club and country, was set to be deployed in the position once again.

Gabriel Jesus was named only as a substitute so Raheem Sterling was poised to play in a similar role for City, who were bidding for a 14th win in their 16th league game of the season.

Starting XI…

17:05: Who needs a striker?! Both Manchester City and Chelsea are starting without a traditional forward this evening. Bold approach from Maurizio Sarri and Pep Guardiola methinks.

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Hazard, Willian.

Subs: Fabregas, Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, Caballero, Giroud, Christensen, Emerson Palmieri.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Delph, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Silva, Mahrez, Sterling, Sane.

Subs: Danilo, Kompany, Gundogan, Otamendi, Gabriel Jesus, Foden, Muric.

Evening…

17:00: Have you caught your breath? It’s been a bumper afternoon of Premier League action that includes a Mohamed Salah hat-trick, 17 goals and a cracking match at Old Trafford – who’d have thought?!

Now we turn our attentions to Stamford Bridge, where champions Manchester City will look to reclaim top position from Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s City will emphasise their Premier League dominance if they pick up three points against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge without the injured Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.

Far from being title rivals, City go into the game with a 10-point advantage over the Blues, and another win would surely strike a terminal blow to Maurizio Sarri’s men on the back of their midweek defeat at Wolves.

Shorn of arguably their two best players, a win would see City make another powerful statement.

CHELSEA vs MANCHESTER CITY

Jorginho and David Luiz are expected to return to Chelsea’s starting line-up for Saturday’s visit of Premier League leaders Manchester City. Blues boss Maurizio Sarri reported no serious injuries ahead of the clash and is expected to restore his first-choice line-up after Wednesday’s loss at Wolves, a second defeat in three league games. Mateo Kovacic could start in midfield and Olivier Giroud could come in up front.

Manchester City pair Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne have been ruled out of the champions’ Premier League trip to Chelsea. Striker Aguero is again not being risked due to a muscular problem while the game comes too early for playmaker De Bruyne (knee) after more than a month out. Left-back Benjamin Mendy (knee) and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo (Achilles) remain on the long-term casualty list.
