Venezuela violinist flees violence to seek U.S. asylum

Wuilly Arteaga became known as a resistance symbol during last year’s deadly protests against Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro for playing his violin amid the chaos, tear gas, and rubber bullets. After Venezuelan authorities jailed and tortured Wuilly, he decided to flee the violence and seek asylum in the United States. As he awaits a decision on his political asylum application, Wuilly spends his days playing his violin on the New York City subway.
