George HW Bush funeral: Where will George Bush Snr be buried? Will it be with his wife?

World leaders and dignitaries are paying their respects to the 41st US President in a memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral, beginning at 4pm GMT (11am EST). Mr Bush Snr died at the age of 94 on Friday at his home in Houston, Texas. His coffin, draped in an American flag, was carried up steps into the cathedral moments before the ceremony’s start in front of hundreds of bystanders. All surviving former US presidents and their spouses are among those paying their respects, along with current US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump.

Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are all present.

Prince Charles and former British Prime Minister John Major, who was in office during Bush’s tenure, are also at the invite-only funeral.

Mr Bush’s body earlier arrived in transit from Capitol Rotunda, where he has lain in state since Monday night.

Thousands of people filed past his casket to pay their respects.

The 41st US president will be buried at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Texas.

He will be buried alongside his wife Barbara, who died in April 2018, and his daughter Pauline ‘Robin’ Robinson Bush, who died aged three in 1953 after battling leukemia.

Today’s service is expected to be a unifying day when Republicans and Democrats cast aside their differences in honour of the late president.

Ron Kaufman, who was George H.W. Bush’s White House political director, said: “You’ll see a lot of joy.

“It’ll show the way of life that people took for granted in many ways and now kind of long for.”

Mr Bush’s son, former President George W Bush, is expected to deliver a eulogy.

But Donald Trump is not delivering a speech in a departure from usual traditions.

Wednesday has been declared a national day of mourning in the United State by President Trump.

Many government offices and US Stock Market buildings are closed.

The White House has also lowered its flag to half mast in commemoration.
