Alaska earthquake: Quake hits Anchorage TODAY 72 hours after HUGE quake destroyed homes

One quake, recorded at 5.52am local time was recorded at magnitude 3.2 and had a depth of 10km. It was located only 20km northwest of Anchorage. USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin told on Sunday more than 1,000 aftershocks of magnitude 1.5 or greater have shaken Alaska since Friday’s big quake.

On Twitter, the centre wrote: “The aftershocks are nerve-wracking, but we want to stress that they are what we would expect for an earthquake like this.”

The original earthquake’s epicenter was about eight miles north of downtown Anchorage and caused structural damage to buildings and roadways.

No deaths or injuries were caused by the huge tremor.

The quake was centred about seven miles (11km) north of Anchorage, according to the USGS.

The Anchorage Police Department said: “There is major infrastructure damage across Anchorage.

“Many homes and buildings are damaged. Many roads and bridges are closed.”

The city of Anchorage has a population of approximately 300,000 and employees who live north of Anchorage are being encouraged to take Monday off or work from home if possible to reduce traffic.

According to CBS Anchorage affiliate KTVA-TV most schools in the Matanuska-Susitna School District have also been closed until Tuesday.

Alaska records an average of 40,000 quakes every year.

The number includes more large tremors than the other 49 US states combined.
