Royal Christmas traditions: How does the royal family celebrate? What’s the plan for 2018?

As with many families, the royals typically gather together to enjoy the festivities on Christmas Day.

As per tradition, Queen Elizabeth, 92, invites the royal family to spend the holiday at Sandringham House on her country estate in Norfolk.

This was not the case during the 1960s however, as when Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh’s children were small, they enjoyed many Christmas celebrations at Windsor Castle.

As the Queen is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, it’ll come as no surprise that the festivities are very important for the Windsors.

Here are some of the top royal Christmas traditions.

Christmas trees

Just like many families across the globe, the royal family have a Christmas tree during December.

Queen Charlotte, consort of George III, is thought to have introduced the tradition to the royal family, with the custom later spreading across the world – thanks to the enthusiasm of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Nowadays, the Queen and members of the royal family put the final touches on their Christmas tree.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, 34 and Meghan Markle, 37, have been spotted buying the festive favourite in the past.

Last year, they bought a 6ft Nordmann fir from the store Pines and Needles in Battersea Park, London.

Christmas presents

It’s not known whether Father Christmas pays a visit, but the royal family’s festive celebrations do feature the exchanging of gifts – however this is not actually done on Christmas morning.

Rather, on Christmas Eve, the royals lay out their presents on trestle tables, and they are given out at teatime.

Queen Elizabeth personally hands out presents to some members of The Royal Household at Buckingham Palace and at Windsor Castle.

What’s more, every member of the The Royal Household will receive a present from Her Majesty.

The Queen will also give out Christmas puddings to her staff – with around 1,500 of the tasty treats being distributed.

This is funded through the Privy Purse, and is accompanied by a greeting card from the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, 97.

Christmas Day

Ahead of tucking into a Christmas feast, on Christmas Day, the royal family will take a trip to church.

The royals, including the Queen, attend a morning service at St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham.

How does the Middleton family spend Christmas Day?

Prince William, 36, has spent Christmas away from his family with his in-laws in the past, and according to reports, this could happen again this year.

The mother of Kate Middleton, also 36, Carole Middleton, has recently shared some insight into how she typically spends the day.

Speaking to The Telegraph’s Stella Magazine, the 63-year-old said: “Generally, we got to church in the morning, then a walk, open a few presents (with more in the evening).

“Then champagne and smoked salmon for lunch, and the main Christmas meal in the evening – but with young grandchildren, maybe we’ll move that forward and have it at lunchtime.”
