Ellie Goulding through the years: Close to Me hitmaker’s changing style

Ellie Goulding, 31, hit the spotlight after the release of her first album in 2010. She has enjoyed years of success ever since, with two more hit albums and worldwide fame. When she first found fame, Ellie favoured an indie look and had an undercut and wore minimal makeup. But in recent years, Ellie has upped the glamour and is more likely to be seen in dazzling gowns paired with a sleek up do.

THEN

Ellie long blonde locks back in 2010, given an edgy vibe with an undercut.

She tended not to wear too much makeup – often appearing with bare skin and mascara but little else.

Clothes-wise, Ellie kept it casual in trainers, jeans or shorts, and printed t-shirts or glittery jumpers.

Her hair has changed colour through the years, going from white grey-blonde to warm honey, and as her fame increased, she tried out various makeup looks.

Ellie has spoken in the past about the pressures of looking good in the spotlight, and how she has coped with it.

Speaking to ES Mag in 2014 she said: “At one time, I was getting all this musical success, but I wasn’t getting all the things that went with it, like magazine covers.

“I was convinced for a long time I wasn’t aesthetically pleasing enough. I would have to angle my face to hide the side of my nose, or my chin.

“Then I stopped caring. I let go. Put a different energy out there — then [the magazine covers] all started to happen.”

NOW

Ellie’s rock chick look is firmly in the past, and she is now more often seen with her hair in stylish tumbling waves.

Her makeup is understated, with fuller brows and perfect lashes now the order of the day.

Any suggestion Ellie has had any cosmetic enhancements in recent years have been firmly denied.

Speaking to the Mirror in 2016 after fans questioned if she had had lip fillers, she said: “I don’t know what it is! I hadn’t done anything to them. Any of my friends will tell you I don’t like needles, I don’t like doctors – it’s impossible for me to have done anything like that.

“My make-up artist does 3D lips and it makes your lips look massive. You add like three layers of lip liner.”
