Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri reveals details of showdown meeting after Tottenham defeat

Chelsea put in a pretty dismal display at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-1 – a score that largely flattered them.

Sarri notably looked furious on the sidelines, shouting instructions at his defeated players.

He has, however, revealed that he spoke to all the players involved in the defeat individually.

“I went player by player. I had a meeting of ten minutes – individual meetings. We lost the [first] match after three and a half months, we have to understand why and from the mental approach,” he explained.

“If you don’t have the determination then maybe you don’t have the character in the mind, I wanted to understand this.”

Chelsea have largely been disregarded for the title this season, with many favouring Liverpool to try and push leaders Manchester City all the way – and it seems that Sarri agrees with that notion too.

“The target in my mind is very clear, it is to win something and in the long term to become the best team in Europe,” Sarri admitted.

“I think the points average of Man City is, I don’t know, but it is very difficult to stay very close. At the moment it is better not to look at the table.

“Our target is to be in the first four positions because we want to play Champions League. The Premier League it is not easy to be in top four. The target is this, we cannot look at City.”

Sarri also highlighted the potential effect that the international break had on his players, citing that Spurs’ key players played at Wembley the Sunday before and were therefore fresh.

“It is difficult to tell why,” Sarri said.

“Someone told me that the international might have been a problem, to be back 100%.

“But I don’t know Maybe for Spurs it was easier as the players played in London on Sunday so was all together, but the situation was similar.”

The form of Eden Hazard seemed to be a topic of interest too, who hasn’t hit the heights he reached at the beginning of the season. Sarri spoke about his fitness levels.

“I am worried that he had a back injury and now ankle, so he has lost a lot of training, so it is normal he is not at the top form of his physical condition. He has one week and a couple of matches,” the Italian said.

“This week it is useful for him to have training. Of course he cannot play 10 matches in 30 days, so sometimes he has to rest.”
