Washington shooting: ‘Active shooter’ in US military hospital – ‘TAKE SHELTER’

Montgomery County Police in the US capital said they were responding to reports of an incident at the facility. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or deaths. People inside the building took to social media to describe scenes of horror and report they are sheltering in cupboards and medical rooms.

One woman on Twitter shared a picture of a message she sent her loved ones, reading: “There’s an active shooter in the hospital. Love you guys.”

US Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger also tweeted from inside the hospital to confirm he has been told there is an active shooter and is sheltering in a room with 40 others.

He wrote: “I am currently at Walter Reed Medical in Bethesda where we’ve been told there is an active shooter. I am currently safe in a conference room with approximately 40 others.”

Someone appearing to be tweeting from his account later wrote: “Rep. Ruppersberger remains sheltered in a back room at Walter Reed. Described mood as calm.

“Has not been given any additional details but does not believe this to be a drill.

The hospital had initally tweeted: “There is a report of an active shooter in the Bldg. 19 basement.

“If you are on the installation, go to the nearest available vehicle, structure, or building that provides a measure of protection and lockdown. If you are not on the installation, stay away.”

Mongomery County Police tweeted they were called to Walter Reed at 2.23pm “to assist with the report of a possible active shooter”.

The US Navy also said officials were aware of the reports, but have not confirmed an active shooter at the hospital.

This is a breaking story. More to follow.
