Man Utd news: Marcus Rashford should be upset with Jose Mourinho for THIS reason

That’s according to Michael Owen after United’s win over Young Boys.

The Red Devils sealed their progression to the Champions League knockout stages with a stoppage-time winner from Marouane Fellaini at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho’s reaction to the winning goal went viral on social media with the Portuguese boss launching a carrier of drinks bottles to the ground with force in an aggressive release of relief.

But the Portuguese boss’ earlier antics on the touchline also attracted attention for the wrong reasons.

After Marcus Rashford fired over the bar when one-on-one juts four minutes into the game, Mourinho turned to his bench and folded his arms while shaking his head in frustration.

Asked about his response, Mourinho said later: “I can never, never, blame a player because of missing chances. Can I have on the touchline – where not a lot of the ones that comment on football were there – can myself or another manager have a reaction of frustration?

“I would invite people to sit on the bench as managers, but I think maybe it is better to have lots of holidays in Barbados and go to the television screen and touch the electronic dummies. I think it is much more comfortable than being on touchline like we managers we are.

“A proper football manager would never criticise another one because it’s deja vu for them. For the ones with a nice life is different.”

Yet Owen insists Mourinho was wrong to show his frustrations towards Rashford when he should instead be trying to motivate the 21-year-old striker.

He said on BT Sport’s Champions League highlights programme: “I would be upset [if I were Rashford].

“You see the ball is actually bouncing a little bit [as he shoots]. I think Rashford’s got three options, he either goes round the goalkeeper to the right, he draws one in from the near post or he dinks the goalkeeper.

“He’s gone for the last option and I don’t like to see the manager shaking his head.

“Being a centre forward is all about confidence, getting into goalscoring positions, you’ve got to make the right decisions.

“I don’t think his decision was wrong. He’s mis-kicked one or two [shots on the night].

“But he looks the liveliest player so if anything I’d be saying, ‘You keep getting in those positions, you’re making the right decisions, they’ll go in soon.’

“Certainly don’t shake your head at him.”

Ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand also hit out at Mourinho during BT’s coverage of the match.

He said: “That says it all, doesn’t it? He [Rashford] is going to see that after the game. What type of message of confidence does that say to him?”
