Rivian R1T is an electric pickup truck with 400 miles of range and incredible specs

Electric car start-up Rivian Automobile has unveiled its first vehicle, an all-electric pickup truck.

The RT1 is boasting some incredible specs most notably the 400-miles off range being promised from launch.

Since launching in 2009 the start-up has kept fairly quiet to be able to develop the technology but also a plan to secure volume production.

The firm took over an old Mitsubishi factory to build its car starting with the R1T.

The five-seater pickup truck will adopt the ’skateboard’ design many electric carmakers have gone with.

It will also come with four small but powerful electric motors which have 147kW power capacity at the wheel and total output can be configured to between 300kW to 562kW.

Power differences match the range of battery packs offer. It comes with a choice of three battery packs – 105 kWh, 130 kWh and 180 kWh.

Rivian says this translated to 230+ miles, 300+ miles and 400+ miles on a full charge and an integrated fast charger.

The car will also produce max torque of run 1,120 Nm allowing it to sprint from 0-60mph in as little as three seconds and on to a top speed of 125mph.

It will also be a pretty useful pickup too with a towing capacity of 5,000kg and a payload capacity of 800kg.

The tailgate can be opened 180-degrees which means you can get closer to it when loading the vehicle.

There is also an ingenious 350-litre storage space which is integrated between the cab and the rear passengers which would be useful for snowboards, skis, a child seat or a golf bag etc.

Below the cab, in the rear, there is also a 200-litre sealed compartment which can also be used to store a spare wheel.

It also has a ‘frunk’ under the bonnet which is another generous storage unit.

It has variable air suspension which can change the ride height by five inches and is also watertight which means that despite it being an electric car it can wade into water a meter deep.

Inside the car, there is a digital instrument cluster and large central display, like the ones seen in Tesla cars which will control the car’s navigation and entertainment.

Materials used inside the car will be a combination of premium woods and synthetic materials which are said to be durable and hard wearing.

Prices for the pickup start at $69,000 but reservations can be made now with a $1,000 deposit.

It is not expected to be delivered until late 2020.
