Hanukkah 2018: When is Hanukkah – what date is it this year?

The date of Hanukkah changes every year, because it depends on the Hebrew calendar, but it always falls in November or December. This year, Hanukkah will begin in the evening of Sunday, December 2 and end in the evening of Monday, December 10. The celebration lasts for eight days and is also referred to as Chanukah.

What is Hanukkah?

More than 2,000 years ago, Jews won a battle against the Greeks to practise their religion freely, after the Greeks banned all Jewish rituals.

They also refused to bow down to a statue of King Antiochus and pray to Greek Gods.

A group of Jews called the Maccabees won a three-year fight against this.

However, the fight resulted in their Jewish temple being destroyed.

The temple was cleaned and repaired before an oil lamp was lit in it as a celebration.

There was only enough oil in the candle for it to burn for one day, but it was still alight eight days later.

As a result, the Hanukkah celebrations last for eight days and light is a big part of the festival.

How do people celebrate Hanukkah?

One candle is lit by people for every night of Hanukkah.

Some families often each other gifts each night of Hanukkah.

A traditional Hanukkah game also involves a spinning top called a dreidel, which is a cube-shaped dice with a Hebrew letter on each of the four sides.

Families and communities will gather to feast on latkes, which are a kind of potato fritter, pancakes and doughnuts.

These foods are fried in oil and are a reminder of the miracle of the oil lasting eight days in the temple.
