Man Utd ‘offer’

Manchester United have been “offered” Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt ahead of the January transfer window.

That is according to transfer guru Duncan Castles, who says the centre-back’s agent Mino Raiola has an ulterior motive.

De Ligt is one of the most highly-rated prospects in Europe and has been tipped to quit Ajax sooner rather than later.

Castles said: “De Ligt has been linked with most of the top English clubs, but I’m told he is closer to Barcelona than any of them.

“I think United have to be savvy about this. Why is Mino Raiolo offering De Ligt to Manchester United when he knows the player’s preference is to go to Spain?

“He knows if he moves to Barcelona it would probably be a far better place for De Ligt to develop as he wouldn’t be expected to go straight into the line-up as he’d be playing alongside someone like Gerard Pique or Samuel Umtiti, who have the experience and those leadership skills. He could develop his career in a less exposed manner.

“Why is he talking to Manchester United? Because if he gets an offer from Manchester United of a high salary he can take that to Barcelona and say: ‘right, this is the benchmark. If you want my player you’ve got to match that or better it.’ It’s a standard agent’s tactic.

“United have got to be aware that Raiola isn’t coming to them because he thinks thats the best option and the only option for his client at present.”

Arsenal EXCLUSIVE

Arsenal boss Unai Emery will be given cash in January – if the Gunners are in contention for a top-four finish, says former striker John Hartson.

“A lot depends on injuries and how well they’re doing. Most clubs want two players for every position, that’s what teams will tell you now,” Hartson explained to Express Sport. “[Lucas] Torreira has come on strong recently too. They’re defending strongly now as well.

“If he wants one or two players, I think the funds will be made available for him but the January window is a very precarious market.

“If Arsenal are in a position where they feel they can have a right push at the top four, Emery may feel he needs cover, if he can earn the right and keep Arsenal in and around that top four, then the board might think they have half a sniff and back the manager and give him what he wants.

“It’ll be down to Emery and where he sees his squad. But like most managers, they always want more players and more money. Even Pep Guardiola would tell you now he could do with a couple more players, they always want more.”

Liverpool boss fumes

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has dismissed Egypt gaffer Javier Aguirre’s claim that Mohamed Salah might need to quit Anfield.

“Who is the manager? Aguirre? Okay. I’ll try to be nice, eh?” Klopp said, when asked about Aguirre’s comments.

“I would say if he [Aguirre] doesn’t win a title in the next couple of years then he has to move to another club or country, for sure.

“I don’t know why people say things like that. It’s not that important. Obviously I don’t agree with it, but it’s a free world and he can say whatever he wants.”

Chelsea transfer clue

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has dropped a hint over who he would target if he was to launch a raid on Tottenham.

“Of course Harry Kane is the best English striker in the moment, so a very important player,” said Sarri ahead of Saturday’s London derby.

“If I had to say another name, I like Eriksen very much. He is a very smart player, a very technical player.

“He’s able to play in midfield and, at the same time, score eight or nine goals in a season. He is a very important player.

“I like him very much, but I don’t want to talk about a Tottenham player for the market.”

Ramsey to Bayern Munich?

German football expert Raphael Honigstein has played down speculation Aaron Ramsey could join Bayern Munich when he leaves Arsenal.

“I’m not entirely sure that this is coming to pass,” Honigstein told The Totally Football Show with James Richardson.

“It is true that Bayern are looking to change the team. It is true that they are in the market for lots of players if they can avoid paying a fee, they’ve shown themselves very adapt at getting those kind of deals done in recent years, getting [Leon] Goretzka for free, getting [Robert] Lewandowski for free.

“I am just not sure the demand for an Aaron Ramsey type of player is that acute at the moment.

“It might just be an opportunistic move, but I should stress that in Munich, which is famously leaky when it comes to these transfer stories, we’ve not really seen that name mentioned at all before or since the news broke in England that an agreement is imminent or has been made.

“So I’d still treat this story with a bit of caution.”
