EU ARMY: Merkel ‘tone deaf’ as she UNDERMINES 70 years of peace with push for EU army

Earlier this month Emmanuel Macon announced that France’s need for a European army stemmed from the need to protect themselves from China, Russia and the United States of America. This resulted in a backlash from the UK as it is in the process of divorcing from the EU and the US as Donald Trump took to Twitter to voice his unhappiness. On the Pledge Mr Nawaz said: “French Presidents Macron’s announcement of wanting to build an EU army to rival NATO and fend of American influence is a bad idea and comes at an even worse time as it would undermine 70 years of European peace.

“Now as a Remainer I welcome Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson calling it an absolutely crazy idea.

British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson publicly denounced the idea of a European army earlier this week.

Mr Williamson said: It is an absolutely crazy idea. Nato has delivered European security for the last 70 years and we should feel very proud of it.

“Should we undermine that by forming a separate military force? Absolutely not.

“You can absolutely rest assured that Britain will never become part of a European army on my watch.”

Mr Nawaz went on to say: “Merkel and Macron have both shown just how tone deaf they are to undermine the EU’s integrity.

“Rather than fantasising about an EU army, France and especially Germany would do well to meet their existing NATO commitments to spending two percent of their GDP on defence.

“France currently spends 1.8 percent and Germany only spends 1.2 percent.”

The Pledge host closed by issuing the two political leaders some advice by saying: “France and Germany should repair their glass hours before throwing too many stones at Trumps America.”
