Carol Kirkwood: BBC Breakfast weather reporter 'scared' after losing her eyesight

The BBC Breakfast legend risked losing her eyesight if she did not undertake surgery to save her vision.

Carol Kirkwood revealed she had lost part of her sight in 2015, the same year she competed on the BBC series Strictly Come Dancing.

At the time the TV star said she suffered from a droopy eyelid and would need to have an operation to sort it out.

“I’ve got to have an operation on my eye and even though it’s minor, I’m still a little scared,” she admitted.

“I’ve got such a droopy eyelid, I’m starting to lose part of my sight and it will only get worse, so I’d better have it sorted,” she told Woman magazine.

A year earlier the radio presenter sparked concern amongst BBC Breakfast viewers when she appeared on-screen with a bloodshot eye.

The meteorologist was inundated with messages from fans on social media wishing her a speedy recovery following her appearance.

Thanking her supporters for their kind words, Carol wrote on Twitter: “Really touched that you are asking about my eye.

“It doesn’t hurt, but I am going to have it checked out properly now.”

Later, she added: “Thank you for asking about my eye again this morning. I really appreciate it.

“[The] Doc says it’s fine, but it could take a month to return to normal.”

Carol’s vision seems to be fine today and she continues to appear on the popular morning programme BBC Breakfast.

Earlier this week, the 56-year-old snapped at her colleague Naga Munchetty after co-star Dan Walker suggested she take a holiday.

The drama unfolded when worried viewers demanded Carol present her weather report in the studio or have an extra day off, as she delivered the forest at Siam Park.

Dan announced: “Team Kirkwood is out in full force – Carol is on location today, very chilly in Siam Park.”

The 41-year-old continued: “Carol there’s quite a few people saying we shouldn’t send you out in the cold.

“[They’re saying] you should have either a day in the nice warm studio or a day off, so your choice really!”

But Naga interjected, exclaiming: “Well she had a day in the studio yesterday and she’s got a day off on Friday – she’s fine!”

Unhappy with Naga’s response, Carol yelled: “Thanks Naga, sympathetic as usual you little rascal!”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
