But the video itself is a rare gem, with Michael opening up on his record-breaking career.

In the interview, recorded two months before his head injury, he touches upon the most important moments of his racing years.

“21 years no championship for Ferrari, four years for myself failing to achieve it, and finally in Suzuka winning the race, an exceptional race, and winning the championship.”

But Michael also speaks about rivals and friends in the circuit.

Describing former McLaren driver Mika Hakkinen the most respected rivals he has met during his career, he says: “The most respected guy in all those years was definitely Mika Hakkinen. Great fights, but stable private relationship.

“In the young days of karting, I looked around and yes I saw Ayrton Senna or Vincenzo Sospiri, but my real idol was Toni Schumacher [former Germany international goalkeeper and no relation] because he was a great soccer player”.

But Ross Brown, technical director and team principal at the teams Michael raced for, is one of the people he most admired during his career.

Michael says: “If you go back to the various teams I have driven for, the various missions – Benetton, after four or five years building it up to the championship, same with Ferrari; we tried the same with Mercedes in less time – is there one thing in common, I would say yes there is: Ross Brawn. Think about it!”

Michael raced in Formula 1 from 1991 to 2012 aboard Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes cars, winning a total of seven F1 championships and 308 races.

Despite his victories were the result of his talent, he doesn’t fail to acknowledge in the interview the teams he worked with.

He said: “Success, as in any situation of life, or in most I know, is about teamwork.

“Yourself, you do what you do. As a team, you will be much stronger.

“Formula One is a team work, and definitely not a one man show.”

And, as he reveals in the video, Michael never let fame blinding him.

He said: “Records is one thing; doubts, I think it is very important to not be over confident – to be skeptical, to look for improvements.

“Yeah, I always felt I am not good enough, I have to work, and that was one part of the recipe that made me what I became.”

The interview was filmed on October 30 2013.

Two months later, on December 29, Michael suffered a serious head injury when he hit his head on a rock in the French Alps.

Following a six month induced coma, Michael was moved from the hospital in Grenoble to the University Hospital of Lausanne to receive further rehabilitation.

He was relocated to his home in September 2014, where he continues to receive medical treatment.

Official updates from the Schumacher family have been few and far between since the accident.

In November 2017, his wife Corinna Betsch, 49, told the press: “The decision to protect his privacy from the public has been taken in Michael’s interest.

“We have made it very clear that something serious has happened.”
