Motorists can land opt to £2,500 fine and invalidate their car insurance cover by giving their friends a lift.
It may seem completely innocuous to offer lifts to friends and family but there is a reason you could run into some trouble with the law.
If you take money in exchange for giving a lift for a motorist then you could be penalised.
While accepting money to cover the cost of petrol is acceptable, if you can be found to be turning a profit by lift-sharing then you could be prosecuted.
Dorset Police are issuing a warning to drivers about how illegal left sharing can land you in trouble.
It follows a shut down of a lift-sharing Facebook group based in Bournemouth and Poole.
You can also land a fine if you advertise online for your lift-sharing service.
Fines for profiting off lift-sharing can be up to £2,500 and your policy can also be invalidated.
A Dorset Police spokesperson told the Bournemouth Echo: “We are aware of several Facebook groups which have been created in order to share lifts in and around the Bournemouth and Poole area.
“When getting into a vehicle with an unlicensed and unvetted stranger, you have no knowledge of their background and risk your own personal safety.
“Before offering a lift in exchange for money, you should speak to your insurance company as this could invalidate your insurance and may result in your vehicle being seized by police, a fixed penalty or prosecution resulting in a fine, points on your licence or disqualification from driving.”
