Chelsea move to fend off Man Utd and PSG by making N’Golo Kante highest-paid player

The club are confident that the France midfielder will put pen to paper on a new five-year deal worth up to £290,000 a week in the next few weeks.

Chelsea are determined to keep hold of the former Leicester midfielder and talks over a new deal were first opened last summer.

Nothing had been signed since those talks were first revealed in July though, and with Kante’s current contract, worth £150,000 a week, set to expire in 2021, there was speculation that the 27 year old could depart.

French club Paris Saint-Germain have been long time admirers of Kante and Manchester United were also linked with him this week.

But Chelsea have no interest in selling one of their most important players.

Though Kante’s new deal would make him the top earner at Stamford Bridge, it would be immediately overtaken if Eden Hazard signed the £300,000-a-week deal that he was also offered in the summer.

The Belgian, however, has nearly 20 months remaining of his current £250,000-a-week deal, and is in no rush to sign.

Kante has always insisted that he is in no rush to leave Chelsea.

The Frenchman has always struck a quiet figure, and doesn’t tend to get drawn into any speculation.

However, Tony Cascarino believes that Kante is unhappy behind the scenes.

In October, he hinted that Chelsea could lose the World Cup winner.

“N’Golo Kante is looking like he is unhappy with the position he is playing in,” he said.

“That is a worry for Chelsea because they could lose him if he is unsettled.

“This is a player who will be wanted by every club in Europe.

“He still looks a quality player, but I’m not convinced he’s suited to this more advanced role on the right of a midfield three with Jorginho in the central sitting role.”
