NBA news: Lakers president Magic Johnson makes prediction over LeBron James and co

Despite that, LeBron James has inspired the team to an impressive run of games in recent weeks, and capped off a good spell by scoring 51 points at his old Miami Heat team.

James returned to Miami and won for the first time since he left the franchise in 2014.

The win showed the Lakers have certainly improved since they went 2-5 during the opening few weeks.

Rumours were even circulating that Lakers basketball president Magic Johnson was preparing to fire head coach Luke Walton.

Johnson claimed that he knew that the team would take time to gel, and that he was not expecting instant success.

He was in attendance on Sunday night as the Lakers beat Miami Heat 113-97, and spoke to media during the game to praise the improvement in the team.

“[I see] A lot of progress,” he said.

“We’re still trying to learn how to play with each other and trying to learn each guy, where he likes it, how he likes it.

“But what I’m liking is the defensive end.

“We’re coming together, we’re pressuring the ball.

“When we pressure the ball, we play well, we get in the passing lanes.”

Johnson explained that he believes the Lakers will continue to improve throughout the year.

He even gave a prediction as to when the team would be performing at their best.

“It’s still a work in progress but I’m happy with where we are,” he added.

“I (still) want us to get better and better and better, and we will.

“I’ve always said it’s going to take us about a month and a half to really understand how to play with each other. So, it’s coming.

“Look for us after the first of the year. I think we’re going to be playing really good basketball.”
