Graeme Swann: Strictly Come Dancing star opens up on routine disaster 'It was horrible'

The 39-year-old former England cricketer fell victim to a technical disaster on Strictly Come Dancing last weekend after his microphone pack came loose from his costume when he and his professional partner Oti Mabuse, 28, began their dance.

Dressed in eye-watering neon aerobics outfits the pair put on an energetic show with their Salsa, Graeme managing to mask the error miraculously well.

However, he and Oti appeared on It Takes Two earlier this week to debrief the eventful weekend, with also saw the land in the dance off, and he explained in detail what went wrong with the costume.

“It was the worst 90 seconds I’ve had since Strictly started, actually during the dance,” he said. “Because my sound pack fell out of my shorts and so I missed a whole section out.

“I was worried it had fallen on the floor,” Graeme continued. “It was horrible to actually do but I still managed to pull it off.”

“You would never have known!” host Zoe Ball, 47, praised.

“It was flopping around,” he revealed. “There was that much crazy stuff going on, no one knew but Oti!”

The vibrant Salsa saw Graeme and Oti incorporate treadmills and steps into the elaborate ‘80s-themed number before he admitted to Tess Daly, 49, at the end that his sound pack had fallen off as he tried to adjust it.

On the subject of the unique routine, for which he was clad in a bright orange vest, pink shorts and a yellow headband and matching leg warmers, Graeme told Zoe: “It was just a neon blur.

“No one’s going to dress like that again. Be memorable!” he added.

“Because I am an amateur dancer, I’ve got to be memorable in some way.

“It was a great fun week. I stand by it, it was a great laugh and the feedback on social media was of the charts,” he said.

The performance scored the dup a respectable 31 points, with Darcey Bussell, 49, saying: “I strangely loved that. You were pumping out the rhythms, there were some really good body isolations.”

“I thought it was bright, it was jolly, it had rhythm in it,” Shirley Ballas, 57, agreed. “There’s a few mistakes here and there but on that kind of performance, you went for it and that’s what really counts.”

Despite a standing ovation from the crowd and delighted comments from the judges, Graeme and Oti found themselves in the bottom two against Danny John-Jules, 58, and his partner Amy Dowden, 27.

Only Craig Revel Horwood, 53, cast his vote in favour of Danny and Amy following the dance off, meaning Graeme and Oti managed to secure their place at Blackpool tonight.

This week, they have been hard at work in training rehearsing their Theatre and Jazz routine as they prepare to make history as the first Strictly pair to perform the new Couples’ Choice category at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

The sportsman is tackling a musical theatre-style number to The Trolley Song from Meet Me in St. Louis.

“Not many people would put means musical theatre together, including me,” he said on It Takes Two, saying the cheerful routine would leave people feeling “warm and fuzzy”.

Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight at 6.45pm on BBC One.
