Liverpool news: Rangers boss Steven Gerrard reveals real reason he doesn’t want Reds job

Gerrard was appointed Rangers manager in the summer after working with the Liverpool youth teams.

And while Gerrard refused to rule out taking the hotseat at Anfield in the future, he backed Klopp to bring success to Anfield.

But he says he is only focussing on Rangers as he looks to mount a serious challenge for the Scottish Premiership title this season.

“Anything is possible,” he told the Guardian.

“Do I want to be the Liverpool manager right now? No, I want to be the Rangers manager. I want to be successful at Rangers.

“It’s a silly question if you ask do I want to be Liverpool manager one day.

“I think everyone on the planet knows the answer to that.

“But I love Jurgen Klopp and I believe he can help Liverpool win the Premier League.”

Liverpool have made an unbeaten start to their 2018-19 league campaign and are currently third in the table.

Gerrard was a key part of the side who came agonisingly close to winning the league in 2013-14.

His infamous slip in a 2-0 defeat by Chelsea towards the end of that campaign effectively ended any hope of them winning it

And he thinks they can finally lay that to rest under Klopp.

“I know what it will mean to the fans because they suffered so much in 2014,” he added.

“So we’re in a great place – and I say ‘we’ because I’m a fan and always will be.

“But I’ve got two teams in my heart now. Rangers and Liverpool.”

Gerrard’s Rangers are currently third in the table and only two points behind leaders and bitter rivals Celtic.

They have not won the league since 2011 having been demoted to the bottom tier of Scottish football.
