Trump and Macron in Nato truce

The US President addressed financial “burden sharing” within Nato – the Euro-Atlantic alliance – by saying: “We want to help Europe but it has to be fair. Right now the burden sharing has been largely on the United States.”Earlier in the week President Macron triggered tensions when discussing the growing threat of cyber attacks. He said: “We are being shaken by hacking attempts in our cyberspace. We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America.”

Later in the interview he spoke about the need for a European army, saying: “We need to have a Europe that can better defend itself by itself, without depending solely on the United States.”

Last night President Trump was criticised for failing to attend a commemoration for American soldiers killed in France.

Rain forced the grounding of his helicopter to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, 50 miles east of Paris – and officials said the two-hour drive was not possible.

But Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications under President Barack Obama, said: “I helped plan all of Obama’s trips. There is always a rain option. Always.” ?
