Red Dead Redemption 2 multiplayer mode is the next major release from Rockstar Games, with much of it still shrouded in mystery.

However, while things at Rockstar HQ are being kept under wraps, there have been a few possible leaks that give us an idea about the upcoming Red Dead Online beta.

We can also look at GTA Online, which has been a massive success and continues to perform well for parent company, Take-Two Interactive.

So what can we expect from Red Dead Online when it comes out on PS4 and Xbox One?

NEW RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 MAP?

Players can reach the original map from Red Dead Redemption but can’t perform many tasks there.

While some random events can unfold when your south of West Elizabeth, it’s all a little quiet right now.

This has led some fans to speculate over its use, considering its highlighted in the official physical map release.

One idea is that it will be the initial focus of Red Dead Online for PS4 and Xbox One.

This could mean it will stage some kind of playable event or tutorial, or could perhaps be an entry level area for first-time online players.

Another idea is that it might be for a special RDR2 multiplayer mode, like Wild West Battle Royale.

Reports from before the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 claimed that Rockstar Games were working on something like this.

But it remains total speculation at this time.

This area may be something connected to the single-player experience too, somewhere that might be part of an upcoming DLC for the game.

RDR2 MULTIPLAYER ITEMS AND MISSIONS

Data miners believe they have found evidence that players will be able to buy vehicles and properties when Red Dead Online full launches.

From what has been shared online, players will be able to purchase wagons with mounted weapons on them, among other items.

There’s also a list of properties players will be able to buy as well, much like with Rockstar’s other massive hit, GTA Online.

These ideas seem pretty likely for Red Dead Online, although they haven’t been announced by Rockstar yet.

A list of missions types has also reportedly leaked, suggesting that Red Dead Online might launch with something close to what was first offered in GTA Online.

Special Survival missions that will lead to an ever-growing shootout with gangs have been reported.

Other types include racing, which is something that could be expanded with the existing horse-riding found in single-player mode.

While this all remains speculation and rumours at this time, Rockstar has provided a small hint at what might be coming next.

Speaking to IGN before release, Josh Needleman, Senior Producer at Rockstar San Diego, explained that they were going to use the best bits of GTA Online as a template, revealing:

“One of the biggest differences between GTA and Red Dead universes is that you’re often speeding through or flying over a GTA world, whereas in Red Dead Redemption the change of pace elevates the intimacy of the overall experience.

“Like the single-player game’s story of Arthur Morgan, we want people to settle into their online characters and feel like every activity makes sense for the character, the setting and the time. This should feel intimate and personal while still feeling fun and action-packed from moment to moment.

“We’ve tried to take the best elements and best content packs from Grand Theft Auto Online and use them for templates for what we are making here. We feel Grand Theft Auto Online really only found its feet creatively with Heists.

“That pack, along with After Hours, The Doomsday Heist, Gun Running and a few others represent the best of Grand Theft Auto Online, and provided the template for what we wanted to use here, (not in terms of content, obviously, but how they combined narrative, gameplay, modes and other content into a cohesive thematic whole) alongside all of the elements we liked from the old Red Dead Redemption multiplayer.”

RED DEAD ONLINE RELEASE DATE?

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the Red Dead Online beta will begin later this month.

A recent financial report also included a reference to the RDR2 multiplayer launch, which came with a warning for fans.

According to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, Red Dead Online will arrive nearer the end of November.

A set day for the big launch was not shared, but it seems a good bet that the last week of the month has been chosen.

Depending on how vigorous Rockstar want to be, they could choose to release the beta during the week and dive straight in with large numbers at the weekend.

Both choices come with their own pros and cons and will certainly put the servers through their paces.

GTA Online faced massive issues with online crashes during its first months, and the same should be expected of Red Dead Online.
