‘Very insulting!’ Donald Trump CANCELS WW1 cemetery visit due to RAIN

The US President pulled out of the scheduled trip to the cemetery at Belleau Wood due to the weather.

A White House statement said Mr Trump’s planned visit had been “canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather”.

The US President sent White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired general, and General Joe Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in his place.

Mr Trump arrived in France yesterday ahead of a weekend of events to mark 100 years since the end of World War 1.

Earlier today, Mr Trump met French President Emmanuel Macron for talks at the Elysee Palace.

The meeting came after the US President sparked controversy by criticising Mr Macron’s calls for an EU army.

Writing on Twitter as he arrived in France, Mr Trump said: “President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the U.S., China and Russia.

“Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidises greatly!”

But speaking at the meeting, Mr Trump insisted he wants a “strong Europe”.

The US President said: “We want a strong Europe, it’s very important to us, and whichever way we can do it the best and more efficient would be something we both want.

“We want to help Europe but it has to be fair. Right now the burden sharing has been largely on the United States.”

Mr Macron added: “That’s why I do believe my proposals for European defence are totally consistent with that.”

The two leaders were joined by their wives for lunch before Mr Trump’s cancelled cemetery visit.

On Sunday, Mr Trump is among 70 world leaders – including Russian President Vladimir Putin – due to attend an Armistice event at the Arc de Triomphe.

And the US President will visit an American cemetery at Suresnes.
