Cristiano Ronaldo: Juventus team-mate makes Ballon d’Or claim ahead of Man Utd tie

That’s the view of Ronaldo’s Juventus team-mate Leonardo Bonucci with the Portuguese star having moved to Turin during the summer.

Ronaldo made the switch to Juventus just weeks after helping Real Madrid win their third Champions League title in a row.

Varane was also part of that team, while the defender went on to lift the World Cup with France during the summer.

And former UEFA president Michel Platini recently sung the praises of Varane.

“It has never been easier than this year to choose who is going to win the Ballon d’Or,” Platini told French publication RMC.

“It’s a Frenchman who is going to win the Ballon d’Or. I hope so.

“There’s only one player who has won the Champions League and the World Cup – it’s Varane.

“There’s always the Ronaldo-Messi debate, but this year there’s only one, one who has won all that, his name is Varane.

“He’s an excellent player. I would have voted for him, the results are the only objective thing, everything else is subjective.

“We can have opinions about Griezmann, Mbappe, [Olivier] Giroud, [Hugo] Lloris, Modric… But the only one who has won everything this year is Raphael Varane.”

But Bonucci believes there shouldn’t be a question over who wins the Ballon d’Or when it is announced in Paris on December 3.

“It would be nice to see a defender win the Ballon d’Or like Varane but, as much as he gave to Real last year and for all that he has shown, the Golden Ball must go to Cristiano Ronaldo,” Bonucci said.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is aiming for his sixth Ballon d’Or thinks it is wide open as far as a winner is concerned.

“The same as usual, even if I don’t know if Messi will be on the podium this time,” he said.

“So, let’s say Salah, Modric, Griezmann, Varane, Mbappe — the French in general because they are world champions.

“But I will wait and see if all these players are still at the top in 10 years, like Messi and I have done, and like we continue to do.”
