Carol Kirkwood: BBC Breakfast star opens up about 'life-threatening' job – 'I get nervous'

Carol Kirkwood is an award-winning weather presenter, but even with a total of nine accolades to her name she still gets anxious when she is in front of the camera.

The 56-year-old, who first joined BBC Breakfast in 1998, said she gets nervous when there is a big weather story to cover.

She also revealed how the adrenalin kicks in when she has to deliver a major report and said her role is important as the “weather can be life-threatening”.

“I get nervous if there’s a big weather story – like lots of snow or torrential rain,” the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant began.

“The adrenaline starts pumping because I want to get it right.”

Speaking to BT.com in 2015, the TV personality added: “Weather can be life-threatening, so I feel a responsibility to do a good job.”

Carol is undoubtedly good at what she does, but even she has offs days, although she insist the job has become second nature.

“When on location, you look down the barrel of the camera and that’s it. Somebody in your ear says that you have two and a half minutes – go!” she told Essential Surrey and SW London a year later.

“It is challenging, but I have been doing it for so long now that it has become second nature.”

Recalling the time she suffered an on-air mishap, she recounted: “Once we were joined by some snow sculptors who painstakingly carved a beautiful teapot out of the snow.

“Before we went to broadcast, I asked if I could touch it. ‘Fine’, they said, as it’s hard-packed ice. So there I was, live on air, exclaiming ‘Look at this beautiful snow sculpture; it’s so sturdy!’

“Then, just as I patted it, the whole thing simply crumbled. Well, I tell you, the look of horror on the faces of these poor men who had spent hours creating it.”

She concluded: “Three hours work down the swanny and I had to stop myself from laughing!”

Besides the unfortunate accident, Carol has had a relatively blemish free media career, however she never set out to work in television.

Initially, the blonde stunner only wanted to work for the BBC in some shape or form and even tried applying for Blue Peter at the tender age of 12.

But when she grew older she decided to work as a secretary at the corporation and was tasked with answering telephone queries.

Eventually, she was given presenting roles across BBC radio, but left after marrying property developer Jimmy Kirkwood in 1990.

Then, when she received a call from a former colleague asking her to audition for a presenting role at the BBC, Carol jumped at the opportunity and landed the job.

She first joined BBC Breakfast in 1998 and has worked on the popular show for some 20 years.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
