Amari Cooper: Real reason Dallas Cowboys signed NFL star from Oakland Raiders

The Cowboys gave up a first round NFL Draft pick to acquire Cooper on October 22 with the wide receiver making his debut against the Tennessee Titans tonight.

The move comes after a relatively poor start for the Cowboys, who went into Monday night’s game with a 3-4 record.

Quarterback Dak Prescott recognised that Cooper could open a number of doors for him when he said: “I mean a great player like that, he’s going to get space, he’s going to get open.

“That’s when we need to get him the ball.”

And now Cowboys owner Jones has revealed the thinking behind picking up Cooper, who scored a touchdown during the first quarter of his debut.

“We knew that we’d have a difficult time, at receiver, getting the quality that Cooper brings us with our No 1 at next year’s Draft,” Jones said.

“So it was a long-range move but then it was short because we think Dak, we think the Cowboys, we think our defence, we think we need what he brings.

“We are hoping he can take the top off it for us.

“I hope that he does influence several things.

“One is that they loosen it up a little bit so Zeke (Elliott) has some more running room in there.

“No 2, I hope he really opens it up for those receivers or tight ends or backs that are out there in the route.

“I think he could influence a lot of things away from the balls that he has got in his hands.”
