US midterms: Michael Bloomberg spends $5MILLION on last-minute ad in support of Democrats

The former New York mayor has released a series of national advertisements ahead of the vote, but his latest public plea is the first in which he appears himself, speaking directly to the camera.

The advertisement – which was paid for by Independence USA PAC, a super PAC funded by Bloomberg himself – first aired during CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ programme on Sunday evening, and will be broadcast on CNN, MSNBC and other major broadcasters throughout Monday, Bloomberg said on Sunday.

The billionaire takes direct aim at “political violence” in the advertisement, and references the deadly shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday October 27 which left 11 people dead.

He says: “Political violence tears at the heart of our democracy. And violence against a religious group, in a house of God, tears at the heart of our humanity.

“At these moments of great national tragedy, we look to Washington to lead. We expect a plan.”

He states that he has “never been a particularly partisan person”, and admits he had “supported candidates from both sides”.

However, he launches a scathing attack on Republicans, noting he is “deeply concerned with the direction of the nation”, and Republicans have “failed to lead”.

He says: “At this moment, we must send a signal to Republicans in Washington that they have failed to lead, failed to find solutions and failed to bring us together. That’s why I’m Democratic.

“We expect a plan. We expect to be called to a higher purpose, we expect to work together. I don’t hear that call coming from Washington these days. Do you? In fact, I hear the opposite.”

In a statement sent to the Washington Post regarding the advertisement, Mr Bloomberg accused President Trump and the Republicans of “fuelling” deep divisions in the US.

He said he was “unwilling to sit by and accept” the current rhetoric coming out of Washington, and stated the US needs leaders who are capable of brining the country together and solving the nation’s critical issues.

In a sharp attack on Republicans he said: “Republicans in Congress have refused to do it. And they have refused to renounce the ugly attacks and fear-mongering coming out of the White House, particularly on immigration.

“The only way that’s going to change is if we hold them accountable at the ballot box, and that’s a big reason why I’m supporting Democrats around the country.”

Mr Bloomberg was also highly critical of President Trump last week, noting that the US leader is partially responsible for the rise in violence in the US.

Speaking to CNN, he said: “When he goes around getting people to scream and hate, bad things happen, and you saw the results here.

“He should be unifying and instead he is exciting people, inciting people.”

Mr Bloomberg’s increasingly active role in the midterm elections has raised suspicions that he will run for the presidency in 2020.

Commenting on a potential presidential bid to CNN, he said: “I am focusing on November 6 and then I’ve said, you know, a few months later I’ll take a look at it and see.”
