Novak Djokovic admits major Paris Masters concern ahead of Karen Khachanov final

The Russian is in the first Masters 1000 final of his career having won three 250 Series events this year after seeing off Dominic Thiem yesterday.

But he will have to overcome Djokovic, who has won his last 22 matches including a clash with Roger Federer in the Paris semi-finals, in today’s final in the French capital (2pm).

As well as Thiem, Khachanov has also defeated Alexander Zverev and John Isner in Paris and is now aiming to overcome a fourth straight top 10 player.

That was despite coming into this tournament with just a 3-16 record against the best 10 players on tour.

And 14-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic expects the highly-rated 22-year-old to come out all guns blazing – insisting he expects a tough afternoon.

“Karen deserves [to be] where he is, in the final,” the Serbian told reporters.

“Except one of his matches, he won all of them in straight sets and he’s first time in the final of a Masters.

“He’s been playing some really good tennis – very, very solid from back of the court. Very strong, great serve.

“I think this is the best that I’ve seen him play ever match to match so I’m sure he’s going to be very motivated to win the title.

“There’s nothing to lose. I expect an exciting final.”

And speaking after his defeat of Thiem, Khachanov – who can rise to No 11 in the world if he wins against Djokovic – believes he is playing at the peak of his powers.

He said: “What I’m happy about is that each match I think I was increasing the level. That shows that I’m improving in my consistency.

“I’m becoming a better player, playing from the beginning of the tournament better and better, so that’s a good thing.

“I think especially the second part of the year I’m playing really my best tennis. I’m having the best season, so far.

“I’m confident and I’m in the final, so I’m really happy about it.

“Let’s see [how the final pans out]. I’m enjoying being on court here in Paris. It’s really nice, a lot of people come and support you, so any scenario is good for me.”
