Liverpool criticism made by MOTD pundit about Southampton after Manchester City win

That is the claim of Match of the Day 2 pundit Ruud Gullit.

held Manchester City to a goalless draw at Anfield last month, although Pep Guardiola’s men spurned a glorious opportunity to snatch all three points with five minutes remaining of the game, but Riyad Mahrez skied his penalty over.

Southampton, however, tried to stifle City, but ended up being on the wrong side of a 6-1 scoreline at the Etihad on Sunday.

Raheem Sterling hit a double, while Leroy Sane and  were also on the scoresheet to send the Citizens top of the Premier League table.

And Gullit is adamant Liverpool are the only team that have had a plan for the reigning Premier League champions.

“After 3-0, City realised they had already won the game,” Gullit said when discussing City’s display.

“They didn’t do the same things as when they started the match.

“If you press, you need to be on top of your players.

“Everyone who is under pressure makes a mistake.

“Liverpool probably played the best against them, because they hassled and harried them and then you have a chance.

“Saints was an in-betweener.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola was delighted with his side’s performance.

He said: “We played excellently, without and especially with the ball.

“We were aggressive in the final third, but we were lucky to score the goal in the last minute of the first half.

“The game was not over, because we concede. Southampton created more chances than most teams this season.”
