Who was Snoke? Were did he come from? How powerful was he? Where did he get that power? Was he a Sith? Was he Darth Plagueis?
The abrupt and, for many, frustrating and disappointing dismissal of Snoke after such a huge build up was just one of the major issues that provoked a fan backlash after Episode 8 and divided the Star Wars fandom.
New reports, however, suggest that Snoke is coming back and not just in a new comic book series.
Did Snoke somehow survive and is it all to do with that mysterious obsidian ring?
The latest report said: “There are huge secrets to do with the character that is all to do with his obsidian ring.
“This most likely will be told in a canon piece that will come out at the end of 2019, just before the release of Star Wars Episode 9, which will be the Age of Resistance comic line. It will indeed go over the back story of Supreme Leader Snoke.
“At some point in the last quarter of 2019 a part of Snoke’s back story that will be told will be all to do with Snoke’s obsidian ring and a huge revelation to do with that.”
The Age of Resistance is a maxi-series of comics spanning three eras of Star Wars storytelling which will be released from July 2019. The series will be written by Tom Taylor and focuses on villains and heroes from the Sequels, including Snoke.
The report adds: “A lot of people are suggesting this has something to do with Supreme Leader Snoke having the ability to be immortal just by wearing the ring.”
The ring featured heavily in promo artwork and merchandise prior to the release of The Last Jedi. Snoke’s sudden exit from the movie confused fans and also left the final trilogy without a clear villain.
Yes, Kylo Ren’s psychological melodrama is intriguing, but is it enough to provide the necessary darkness for a climactic ending to all nine films?
What if Snoke were somehow able to return, or at the very least influence events?
If Kylo has taken the ring and wears it, Snoke’s spirit could continue to exert a terrible control over him. Or perhaps Snoke could even return in an equivalent way to a Light Side Force ghost?
Snoke could provide the necessary evil which will mean Kylo Ren and Rey have to reunite to face a common foe and potentially give Kylo a means to redeem himself.
