NBA news: Kevin Durant backed to join New York Knicks… but there’s a catch

However, the Knicks will need one more superstar to entice Durant to Madison Square Garden.

At least that’s according to NBA legend Reggie Miller, who claims Durant is more likely to leave the Golden State Warriors than Klay Thompson in 2019.

Both players can become free agents next summer with plenty of speculation about whether the duo will decide to stay or leave.

The Knicks have been heavily linked with interest to play Durant alongside Kristaps Porzingis and revive the famous franchise.

However, Miller believes the Knicks will need to sign someone like Kyrie Irving in order to persuade Durant to join them.

“Listening to Klay’s comments post-game, I think everyone is saying Klay’s gone, he wants his own team, it’s time for him to spread his wings,” Miller said on the Dan Patrick Show.

“I think he’s content, I’m just not sure there’s enough dollars to pay everyone.

“If they end up winning again, that’s three in a row for Kevin Durant.

“It pretty much cements… I can see him moving on.

“At the end of the day, this team can be like a Celtics dynasty if they can find a way to stick together but somebody is going to have to take a pay cut and Klay is already saying he isn’t taking a hometown discount and Kevin Duranr shouldn’t take a hometown discount.

“I don’t know if there’s enough money in the bank to pay all these guys.

“I don’t see Klay wanting to leave because he’s being spoon-fed right now.

He added: “I could see, if Kevin Durant wants to leave, number one I would leave the west coast.

“I could see Madison Square Garden with his name written all over it.

“He could be the marquee guy in New York. If Porzingis comes back healthy and they can get possibly Kyrie.

“They’re going to need two guys to go to New York with KD.

“I can see that happening. A weaker conference but at the end of the day I will always trump winning.

“Right now, those guys are playing basketball versus themselves.

“Barring major injury, no one will be able to get a game, possibly two, off the Warriors come playoff time.”
