Arsenal news: Gunners legend Gilberto Silva gives Lucas Torreira verdict

Torreira joined the Gunners from Sampdoria for £26million in the summer and has been a mainstay under Unai Emery.

The Uruguayan starred throughout Arsenal’s recent 11 game winning run, with that streak brought to an end by a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Silva was a member of Arsenal’s invincibles side in 2003-04 while he also helped Brazil to World Cup victory in 2002.

And he has given his seal of approval to the 22-year-old, and backed him to continue flourishing.

“I thought in the World Cup he played very well for Uruguay,” Gilberto said.

“It was nice because you compare the way this guy plays – his stature is not high, he’s a middle-sized player – but he knows how to position himself and play nice football.

“He makes things simple, and of course at Arsenal we have a lot of expectation for him to keep the team ticking, the support and the position.

Arsenal need somebody like that, and I hope that he does well.”

Though Arsenal have had a positive start to the season, Robbie Savage has told Emery to make a key signing in January.

“Unai Emery’s acid test will be next week, when Liverpool bring their big guns to the Emirates, but the early evidence suggests Arsenal are back in business,” Savage told the Mirror.

“The highest compliment I can pay Emery is that I’ve not heard any Arsenal supporters saying they wished Arsene Wenger was still in charge.

“That’s not a dig at Wenger, who will always be the man who built The Invincibles it’s a tribute to Emery that he’s got his feet under the table so quickly.

“Although they still look a top class centre-half short of challenging for the title, Emery’s Gunners look capable of a top four finish.

“And that could upset the apple cart across north London, where Tottenham appeared to have seized the high ground despite having no trophies to show for it since 2008.”
