Man City beating Tottenham gave Mahrez the chance to deliver touching Leicester tribute

Manchester City beat Tottenham on a scrappy night at Wembley. There were NFL prints all around the stadium but football, eventually, prevailed.

Mahrez scored the winner and you could say it was meant to be.

The footballing world remains in mourning following the Leicester helicopter crash, where club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha perished alongside Nursara Suknamai, Kaveporn Punpare, Eric Swaffer and Izabela Roza Lechowicz.

And Mahrez stepped up on a night where emotions were running high.

Leicester moulded the Algeria international into the superstar he is today.

Srivaddhanaprabha took a punt on Mahrez, signing him from Le Havre and bringing him to the King Power Stadium in January 2014.

That, despite the player originally thinking they were a rugby club.

Together, they made the dreams of many Foxes fans come true.

In 2016, when they were charging towards the Premier League title, many expected the wheels to come off.

Not Srivaddhanaprabha, though. To ensure they stay motivated, he promised them a luxury new car each.

And he delivered. When Leicester won the title, he splashed out £960,000 on new Mercedes’ for each member of the squad.

That was the sort of man he was and Mahrez, like many of his Foxes team-mates, were enchanted by him.

The Algeria international said in an emotional Instagram post: “One of the best person I’ve ever met.

“I will never forget you. Rest In Peace Vichai.”

City’s win over Tottenham will win no awards for the most entertaining match of the Premier League season.

But Mahrez’s tribute to Srivaddhanaprabha – he pointed to the sky after his winner – will rank among the most poignant.
