Greece vows to pursue Germany for £250billion in wartime reparations

Meanwhile Polish-born MP , a long-term campaigner for Germany to pay compensation to other countries including Poland and Britain, has said Germany “would not be trusted” until it had “paid what it owed”.

The German government has rejected claims it owes anything to Greece or Poland for the damage caused during the conflict, insisting the matter was dealt with in 1960, when it paid Athens 115 million deutschmarks, equal to £205million in today’s money.

But Greece has renewed its claims despite Mr Steinmeier’s comments during a state visit earlier this month.

Costas Douzinas, who heads the Greek parliament’s defence and foreign relations committee, said: “This is an issue that psychologically still rankles, and as a government we are absolutely determined to raise it.

“Obviously Greece couldn’t do that when it was in a bailout programme receiving loans from the EU and Berlin.

“It would have been totally contradictory.”

However, Greece is pressing ahead with its claims after the first all-inclusive parliamentary inquiry into the damage wrought by the , who occupied Greece for much of the war.

The consequence report estimates compensation totally £256bn is owed for the destruction Greece sustained between 1941 and 1944, the years the country was subject to Third Reich rule.

In addition, it argues Greece is also owed almost £10billion for a 476m Reichsmark loan ’s forces seized from the Greek central bank in 1943.

Mr Douzinas, who is also a professor of law at London University, said: “What we now have is a complete reading of the situation with a report that looks at the total damage inflicted on the country and its people during Nazi occupation.

“In the past there were appraisals of the destruction wrought in individual incidents but never on this scale.”

To prepare their report, officials examined more than 400,000 pages of records from US national archives chronicling the atrocities, as well as other documents from Russia.

These reveal widespread massacres, destruction of homes and the shooting of victims.

Tens of thousands of Greeks who wages a guerrilla war against the Wehrmacht died in reprisals, while at least 300,000 died of famine.

In total, an estimated 40,000 people are believed to have starved to death in the first year of occupation.

Greece’s Jewish community was almost completely wiped out.

Stelios Koulouglou, who represents Greece’s governing Syriza party in the European parliament, said: “Germany has never properly assumed its historical responsibility for the wholesale destruction of the country

“It was a catastrophe that was so complete it played a major part in delaying our country’s development as a modern European state.”

Mr Kawczynski, who said in May Germany debt to Britain added up to a staggering £3.6 trillion at today’s rates, told Express.co.uk: “Until Germany honours her outstanding war debts and compensates those affected in their millions she will not be trusted by millions including me.

“The misery torture and murder that was carried out by German soldiers and we will never forget and will continue to share with future generations until this issue is resolved.”
