Arsenal news: Gunners reveal January transfer window plans – bad news for Unai Emery

The Gunners have bounced back from a disappointing start to go 12 games unbeaten, including an 11-match winning streak across the Premier League, the Europa League and the Carabao Cup.

But Arsenal have been fortunate in several matches across that streak with their defensive weaknesses exposed on several occasions.

Granit Xhaka played as a make-shift left-back in yesterday’s 2-2 draw away at Crystal Palace with Nacho Monreal injured and Sead Kolasinac also suffering with a strain.

Unai Emery spent over £70million in the summer to upgrade his side and despite some of Arsenal’s stylish recent wins, the need for further strengthening is clear.

Yet director of football Sanllehi, formerly at Barcelona, has dismissed any chances of the north London outfit doing business in the winter.

That’s despite rumours of interest in the likes of Ever Banega and Nicolo Barella with Aaron Ramsey set to depart on a free at the expiry of his contract in the summer.

“I don’t believe much in the winter window. There are exceptions,” Sanllehi told the Daily Mail.

“But if you have the right plan in the summer and the team are performing at the level you expect, you should not go to that window or try to avoid it.

“It’s there for emergencies, a big injury or if something is really not working and you need to recover there.

“I give much more importance to the summer windows.”

With the summer taking priority for Arsenal, Sanllehi has hinted that the club will get their preparation begun early in order to continue the promise of Emery’s tenure.

Speaking of last summer, the Arsenal chief added: “We did investment very early, because we understand this market as being inflationary, so the longer you take to make the signings the higher the prices normally become.

“We did all the homework beforehand, I would say from February, March.”

Emery was restricted with his budget last summer, his most expensive signing the £26.4m splashed on midfielder Lucas Torreira.

By contrast, Liverpool spent over £40m on three players – including £67m on goalkeeper Alisson – while fellow rivals Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City also brought in fresh faces that cost them in excess of £50m.

On Arsenal’s chances of spending huge money on new players – having done so on the likes of strike pairing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in recent windows – Sanllehi added: “They [club owners the Kroenkes] would definitely listen.

“Let’s cross that bridge when we get to it. They have proven to us that they are extremely reasonable, and passionate about this project.

“We have a direct line with them, we talk constantly and they are very intelligent people. If there is a very clear opportunity, we would definitely talk to them about it.”

Arsenal’s next Premier League outing pits them with their first true test since taking on Man City and Chelsea in the first two games, with Liverpool visiting the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm).

Before then, Emery’s charges face Blackpool at home in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night (7.45pm).
