Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho reveals how Anthony Martial has turned form around

Martial scored what proved to be the decisive goal as Mourinho’s side ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba had put United in front after converting his own saved penalty from the rebound after 27 minutes.

Martial doubled the lead just after half-time, while Gylfi Sigurdsson reduced the deficit to one goal with a 77th-minute penalty.

And Mourinho singled out the young Frenchman, 22, for praise and says he is now beginning to realise his potential after working on the mental side of his game.

“He has the same natural talents he had one or two years ago,” Mourinho said.

“But he is improving the way he thinks of football and improving his role in the team. I am happy with boys who are improving.”

Victory for United was anything but comfortable, with the visitors racking up 14 shots in an exciting clash.

Mourinho admitted it was a difficult game, but insisted he was satisfied with Martial’s display.

“It is difficult periods for them and for me because I want more from them but I am really happy with Anthony.

“Everton is not on paper a top-four side, but they are a team capable of coming here to fight for a result the way they did. Every match is difficult.

“In terms of my approach to my young players, that’s the way I am.

“In the end, you have the rewards of that hard work if they don’t give up and they don’t have an entourage who supports their weaknesses.

“Luke Shaw was strong and these people were good to him and now Anthony is becoming a better player.”

United moved above Everton in to eighth in the Premier League table.

But they remain five points off the Champions League places.
