Mohamed Salah: Why Jurgen Klopp selection is hurting Liverpool star – Paul Merson

That is the view of Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal star Paul Merson.

Shaqiri started Liverpool’s Premier League win over Huddersfield last Saturday in an attacking front three.

The Switzerland international laid on the assist for Salah’s goal in the 1-0 victory.

Shaqiri was rewarded with a start in the Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday, but this time as one of the three midfielders.

He assisted Salah on that occasion too and Merson admits the Egyptian would get far more chances in a game if Shaqiri played.

However, he believes Liverpool would not be solid enough to do that on a regular basis.

When asked if Salah could benefit from Shaqiri being in the team, Merson said: “Very much so.

“I think if you look at Liverpool’s midfield – (Jordan) Henderson, (James) Milner, (Georginio) Wijnaldum. They haven’t got that ball in them what Shaqiri had last weekend (against Huddersfield).

“It weren’t the hardest ball in the world but it’s a good ball.

“He doesn’t have to check, he just runs straight onto it and it’s a good finish.

“I think it would be a big difference, but with Shaqiri in the team, they’re not as solid.

“You need to be solid because you can say to that front three ‘you lot get on with it and I’ve got three solid midfield players and a good back four’, they’ll win more games than often for you.

“I think if Shaqiri comes in the team it sort of stretches the game, he’s not as disciplined as the other three.

“You don’t need to get into a ‘you have a shot, we have a shot’ game when you’ve got them three up front.”

Salah scored twice against Red Star to take his tally this season to six goals.

He has reached 50 goals for Liverpool already and Merson believes Real Madrid will be keen on him sooner rather than later.

“Mo Salah’s goals record for Liverpool is phenomenal but it’s only a matter of time until Real Madrid come calling,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“That’s some record, to be the fastest man to score 50 for Liverpool, especially when people are saying you are having a bad season!

“But if he keeps on scoring Madrid will come calling.

“How can they not? They need to do something big and they will want him in January. They are struggling like mad.

“If Salah wanted to go, Liverpool would be powerless to stop him.”
