Glenn Hoddle: Brighton boss Chris Hughton in touching tribute – ‘I looked up to him’

Hoddle, who turns 61 today, was taken to hospital in a serious condition following a reported collapse in the BT Sport studios this morning.

He was due to appear on the BT Sport Score programme, which was cancelled after the incident.

And speaking after his Seagulls side beat Wolves 1-0 at the Amex Stadium, former Tottenham player and coach Hughton said: “At this moment my thoughts and prayers go to him, I heard the news as I was coming off the pitch.

“Glenn is a friend, I have known him for a long time back to my Spurs youth days.

“He was a model professional, the one we looked up to and we wish him all the best.”

Tributes have poured in from all over the football world, most notably from his former clubs.

Hoddle enjoys legend status at Spurs having splayed for the club for 12 years in the 1970s and 80s, before returning years later as manager.

And they took to Twitter to wish him well.

“Everybody at the Club sends their best wishes to @GlennHoddle for a full and speedy recovery after he was taken ill this morning,” they wrote.

Chelsea, where he spent time as both player-manager and as full-time boss, were also quick to pay tribute.

The club said: “Our thoughts are with former Blues boss Glenn Hoddle, who has been taken seriously ill on his 61st birthday. We’re right with you, Glenn.”

Hoddle also played for Swindon in the early 1990s.

And they said: “We would like to take this moment to send our support and best wishes to Glenn Hoddle.”
