The package appears to be similar in nature to those found in New York and Washington DC.

Authorities are also searching for a package addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden, according to reports.

Yesterday New York Police issued an emergency alert, urging people to “shelter” near the Time Warner Centre after a suspected bomb was found in the post room of news broadcaster CNN.

The package has been labelled as “suspicious” as authorities investigate whether it could be linked to other devices sent to CNN, the former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Ms Waters, who represents California’s 43rd congressional district, wrote in a statement: “I have been informed by US Capitol Police that my Washington, DC office was the target of a suspicious package that has been referred to the FBI.

“I am appreciative of the law enforcement entities who intercepted the package and are investigating this matter.

“I unequivocally condemn any and all acts of violence and terror.”

A bomb squad is reportedly on the scene after the package was discovered and flagged to security personnel.

Los Angeles Police Department and agents from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are looking into the package.

According to anonymous sources, the package was addressed to Maxine Waters and was similar to bombs discovered near the homes and offices of prominent Democratic figures over the past 48 hours.

Earlier, another package addressed to Ms Waters was intercepted in Maryland.

A law enforcement official said the package addressed to Ms Waters had similar markings and characteristics to five others discovered this week.

The other five “mail bomb” packages contained pipe bombs which targeted senior figures from the Democratic Party and CNN – a news outlet Trump has branded as “the enemy of the people” and “fake news”.

The bombs sent to the prominent Democrats were also reportedly packed with shards of glass.

Ms Waters revealed earlier on Wednesday her Washington office had also been the target of a suspicious package, which was intercepted at a congressional mail processing facility.

It was unclear if the intercepted package was related to the others.

In June this year, Trump said Ms Waters was “an extraordinarily low IQ person” in a blistering Twitter tirade.

The package sent to Ms Waters was discovered after Trump called for the bomber to be brought to justice, assuring “the full weight of the government” was behind the investigation.

After meeting the FBI, Justice Department and DHS, he said: “Acts or threats of political violence have no place of any kind in the United States of America.”

Bill de Blasio

Speaking at a campaign rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin, Trump employed a markedly more subdued tone than usual as he condemned the mail bombers.

He said: “Any acts or threats of political violence are attacks on our nation itself.”

The earlier confirmed bombs, including one sent to George Soros on Monday night, were constructed with PVC pipe, which x-rays showed contained shrapnel, an explosive, and timers.

Senior bomb technicians confirmed all the components required to detonate the devices were present.

But none of the bombs actually exploded.

The FBI’s director Christopher Wray has released a statement about the mail bomb scares.

He said: “This investigation is of the highest priority for the FBI.

“We have committed the full strength of the FBI’s resources and, together with our partners on our Joint Terrorism Task Forces, we will continue to work to identify and arrest whoever is responsible for sending these packages.

“We ask anyone who may have information to contact the FBI.

“Do not hesitate to call; no piece of information is too small to help us in this investigation.”

The statement was accompanied by an image of a package that looked similar to the found (above).

The packages were mailed in manila envelopes with bubble wrap interior.

The packages were affixed with computer-printed address labels and six Forever stamps.

All packages had a return address of “DEBBIE WASSERMAN SHULTZ” in Florida.
