Home security: Burglaries set to INCREASE as clocks go back – can you avoid them?

Home security is a worry for many Britons, especially with nights getting longer.

New research by ADT has confirmed those fears, revealing the period when most break-ins happen in Britain.

The study revealed that nearly three-quarters (71 per cent) of burglaries in the UK take place during the darker months of the year.

The research was released ahead of the clocks going back this weekend, adding another hour of darkness onto the night.

The clocks go back on Sunday 28 October, and ADT has found out that two-thirds of Britons (60 per cent) will feel more vulnerable to break-ins.

However, despite the high numbers, keeping homes warm (50 per cent) and paying energy bills (37 per cent) topped the list of concerns.

Shockingly 14 per cent of Britons have no home security measures in place at all.

Just 23 per cent of people have a security alarm to warn off intruders, with other measures being taken.

The research did however show that 57 per cent of Britons keep their lights on to make it look like someone is home.

It also showed that 48 per cent of homeowners closed their blinds of curtains for preventative measures, and eight per cent claimed they bought a dog to deter burglars.

The results also named December as the month when most break ins happen.

During the festive month, almost one in 10 Britons experienced a burglary last year alone.

The study was conducted on 2,000 respondents by home sectary firm ADT.

The security company teamed up with best-selling author Sophie Hannah to publish the first ever “edutainment” crime fiction novella – “A Dark Time”.

The story features security hints and tips subtly woven into the plot, to raise awareness on how to keep homes protected during the darker nights.

Lee Jasper, security expert at ADT commented: “Year on year, we have seen a 10 per cent increase in burglaries during the darker months*, so it’s vital that people put the right security measures in place to help protect their homes to avoid falling victim.

“The research shows we’re feeling more vulnerable as a nation when the clocks go back, however, there is a clear lack of awareness when it comes down to preventing burglaries.

“We’re hoping that the launch of A Dark Time can help the nation safeguard their homes, in an entertaining and engaging way.”

To help Britons outsmart burglars and protect themselves from break-ins, a former detective recently revealed his home security tips.

In response to shocking break-in statistics, former detective Rav Wilding created a simple guide on how Britons can outsmart burglars and keep their homes safe.
