World’s longest sea-crossing bridge which stretches 34 MILES to open in China this week

Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the opening ceremony of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge when it opens to drivers on Wednesday at 9am local time.

Workers used 420,000 tonnes of steel to build the bridge, which is enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers.

The incredible bridge links Hong Kong’s Lantau island to Zhuhai on the southern coast of Guangdong province and Macau, a popular tourist destination for Chinese visitors.

The 55km (34 mile) bridge is part of the Greater Bay Area plan, covering 21,8000 square miles across southern China, and encompassing 11 cities, including Hong Kong and Macau to Chinese mainland.

The extraordinary design also includes a 6.7km (4mile) submerged tunnel to help it avoid the busy shipping paths over the Pearl River Delta.

The tunnel runs between two artificial islands, each measuring 100,000 square metres in relatively shallow waters.

The bridge was due to open in 2016, but repeated delays due to construction issues, budget overruns and safety issues, pushed it back to this year.

The building of the £14billion bridge has faced fierce criticism as it is taxpayer funded in a city blighted by widespread poverty and a housing crisis.

While, some residents fear its arrival will see the city swamped by tourists from mainland China.

Others claim the bridge, which includes artificial islands, will be used as a tool to drag the city closer into the Chinese government’s grip.

But officials say the bridge will cut journey times between the cities from three hours to just 30 minutes and will be in use for 120 years.

Hong Kong’s secretary for transport and housing, Frank Chan Fan, said: “The bridge is not just a mega transport infrastructure jointly built by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

“The collaboration between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in terms of trade, finance, logistics and tourism will be strengthened.

“Hong Kong will assume a more proactive role in the development of the Greater Bay Area.”

Nine workers have died and more than 200 others have been injured building the bridge.

Most of them were involved in accidents where they slipped from high points of the bridge.

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is the world’s longest sea crossing and the sixth longest bridge on earth.
