Shocking moment FREAK hailstorm FLOODS Rome and TRAPS residents –VIDEO

A freak hailstorm has caused widespread flooding in Italy, leaving motorists trapped in their cars.

A video shows vehicles half-submerged in an ice sheet formed by hail and rain, taken by residents who seem to be trapped inside their car.

One motorist is forced to abandon their vehicle, as lightning bears down overhead.

A Twitter user shared the video, captioning: “Major hailstorm in Rome, Italy night, Oct 21! Bad idea to drive in this.”

One user replied: “Good grief. When is this, The Day After Tomorrow?”

A third added: “Hail? That’s a glacier.”

Separate footage shows the storm’s runoff flooding escalators and going underground, as people sit on railings to avoid being caught up in the gushing icy water.

Parts of southern and central Italy are on high alert, after storms brought hail, floods and strong winds to the country.

The Civil Protection Department issued an orange alert for the region of Calabria.

Last week, BBC weather forecast flooding for parts of Italy.

BBC weather presenter Stav Danaos said: “While much of Europe enjoys fine dry warm stilted weather for the next few days it is going to be a very unsettled picture across the central and western Mediterranean.

“We could see some flooding issues breaking out in parts of Italy, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, southern France and again into the Balearics.

“For the time being, it is largely dry across the eastern Mediterranean, a few showers and thunderstorms around but things will turn more unsettled here towards the end of the week and the weekend.”

Last Wednesday, BBC’s Susan Powell also forecast unsettled weather for some holiday hotspots in the Mediterranean this week.

She said: “Just look at the next 24 to 48 hours across the western side of the Med. The Balearics are under there somewhere, Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Sardinia, Corsica. Everything is just getting plastered with rain.

“Even on into the end of this week, look further north, closer to home, and for once stay put and you are probably onto a winner.”
