Cancer warning – why you should never ignore this painful symptom

Cancer is a deadly condition that’s caused by cells growing and reproducing uncontrollably.

These cancerous cells can destroy surrounding tissue, which includes healthy cells and organs.

Keeping an eye out for cancer symptoms could lower your risk of the disease, said the NHS.

Having a persistent stomach pain could be an early warning sign of stomach cancer, it said.

Stomach cancer is a relatively uncommon type of cancer, but more than 6,000 people are diagnosed with it every year in the UK.

It’s caused by caches to the cells of the stomach, and left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body.

Stomach cancer symptoms can be very vague, and may be easily mistaken for something else.

But, one of the key signs of stomach cancer is having a persistent stomach pain, said the NHS.

“Many symptoms of stomach cancer are similar to less serious conditions, so it can be difficult to recognise in the early stages,” it said.

“Early stage symptoms include pain in your stomach or breastbone.

“Stomach cancer is usually easier to treat if it’s diagnosed early.

“It’s therefore important for your GP to refer you to a specialist as soon as possible if stomach cancer is suspected.

“Indigestion is a very common symptom in the general population. However, it’s unlikely that someone with indigestion who’s under the age of 55 will have stomach cancer.”

Most stomach pains aren’t caused by anything serious, and will go away by themselves after a few days.

It could be caused by having trapped wind, indigestion, constipation, or diarrhoea.

Speak to a GP if the pain suddenly gets worse, or if the pain keeps coming back.

But, go straight to A&E if it hurts when you touch your stomach, or if your stools are bloody or black.

Lower your risk of cancer by making some small lifestyle or diet swaps.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is crucial to lowering your chances of the condition.

Everyone should also aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week.
