Google Maps update – All the huge new features you may have missed this month

Google Maps is the Mountain View firm’s solution to navigation that is incredibly popular.

But in the last few weeks the software has been granted a number of substantial improvements that will surely be extremely helpful to everyone that harnesses it.

Sharing your location is simpler than ever

Google recently rolled out an update to Maps that makes sharing a real-time location and estimated time of arrival easier.

A new “share trip progress” prompt has been added to the app that allows others to be informed of where you are and when you will arrive at a certain location.

What’s more, Google was eager to explain the functionality will work with third-party apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

In a blog post, the American tech firm said: “Getting where you need to go is important, but making it to your destination safe and sound is the most important thing of all.

“Today, Google Maps is improving journey sharing on Android and bringing it to iOS, making it easier to share your ETA with loved ones so you can keep your hands off your phone and your eyes on the road.

“After you’ve started navigating to a destination, tap on the ˄ button and then on ‘Share trip progress’.

“From here you’ll be able to share your live location, route, and ETA with all your favourite contacts.

“Today’s update also allows for sharing across 3rd party apps like Facebook Messenger, Line, WhatsApp, and more—so you can communicate with friends on the platforms you prefer.

“Once your journey ends, you’ll automatically stop sharing your location.”

The newly-improved location sharing features are currently available on both iOS and Android devices.

Charging station locations have arrived

Google Maps now features the locations of electronic vehicle charging stations so finding a plug for your car is easier than ever.

Simply typing in the words “ev charging” or “ev charging stations” will present users with an array of local banks.

Globally Tesla and Chargepoint outlets will be shown while UK users will also have access to locations from Chargemaster and Pod Point.

Those in the US can quickly find stations from SemaConnect, EVgo and Blink meanwhile.

The addition is out now on Android and iOS systems.

However, Google noted the feature will be added to desktops “in the coming weeks”.

Commuters rejoice

One of the most notable changes to arrive for Google Maps this month is with a revamped commuting tab that displays real-time updates if there is a delay to a route or public transport system.

What’s more, the exact location of both buses and trains has arrived in “80 regions worldwide” that will surely help people plan their journeys more precisely.

Explaining the new features, Google said: “Sprinting to the subway station only to find that your train is delayed is our least favourite way to start the day.

“Now, transit riders in 80 regions worldwide will be able to see exactly where their bus or train is in real time on the map.

“This will help you plan your day more efficiently—you’ll know if you can spend an extra few minutes grabbing coffee, or if you really do need to make a run for it to catch your bus.”
