Man Utd absolutely SLAMMED by Arsenal legend over Luke Shaw contract extension

That’s the opinion of former Arsenal man turned talkSPORT pundit Perry Groves.

Shaw put pen-to-paper on a new five-year deal this week and the young defender is reportedly set to take home a staggering £200,000 each week.

Following his horror double leg fracture sustained in Manchester United’s Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in 2015, the left-back has struggled to secure regular playing time at Old Trafford – he’s made just 50 Premier League appearances since making the switch from Southampton in June 2014.

But while Shaw has made an impressive start to the current season under Jose Mourinho, Groves believes his lack of playing time since joining the club should have been reflected in his new salary.

“If you’re telling me he deserves to go from £75,000 to double your money just for getting in the team and playing well over that short period of time, I’m not having it,” Groves vented on talkSPORT.

“Whichever figure it is, it’s far too much money.

“He’s come through adversity, which I get, he’s starting to fulfil his potential.

“He’s had his manager criticising his performances publicly, dragging him off at half time, so he’s shown great mental strength to come back from that.

“But I think they’ve gone in and paid him too much.

“Now, this is a player that hasn’t played more than 16 games in a season for United,” Groves continued.

“But his performances have improved.

“The reason for a five-year contract is his age and that gives United security.

“If he does reach the potential we all think he’s got, over a longer period of time and he’s consistent, then United have safe-guarded one of their assets.”
