Royal fears as Tonga hit by EARTHQUAKE just days before Meghan and Harry visit

The 4.9 magntiude earthuake struck on Tuesday UTC 09.17 creating a depth of 10km in the south of Niuatoputapu island.

The quake struck around 105km north east of Hihifo, the main village of the island, the US Geological Society (USGS) confirmed in an update.

So far there are no reports of damage to the area or injuries.

The latest quake to shatter the region follows a spate of similar magitudes recorded in the last week.

On October 9, a Magnitude 5.1 earthquake, 161km west of Neiafu, hit Tonga.

And days later, a 5.1 magntiude earthquake struck 438 km south-west of Nuku‘alofa.

The news will come as a shock to the Royal family, who plan to visit the island in the next few days.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are due to visit the region as part of their 16-day Royal tour of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

The couple landed in Sydney, Australia on Monday and are due to visit the area shortly.

Two huge tremors were also felt east of the island of New Caledonia, situated in the notorious Ring of Fire region.

The island suffered a 6.8 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday afternoon.

It was reviewed after it was initially registered as a 6.5 and then downgraded to a 6.3 on the Richter scale.

Earlier on Tuesday, a previous earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 was recorded east of New Caledonia in the South Pacific .

The quake’s epicentre was 120 miles east of Nadine in the Loyalty Islands and happened at a depth of 20 miles, the USGS confirmed.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there was no immediate threat of a tsunami.

Officials in New Caledonia also said there was no damage to buidings, althouhg there are a number of “vulnerable structures”, the USGS said.

The latest updates from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows a chaotic Ring of Fire.

Tonga and New Caledonia are both situated in the Ring Of Fire, known for its volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

New Caledonia island was the qorst affected by Tuesday’s earthquakes.

A total of 15 fresh tremors in the territory are all in the mid-to-high range, and losses to both life and economy are expected to arise as a result.

They also confirmed that no deaths had taken place.

USGS states: “Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking.”

New Caledonia sits right on the fault line of the Pacific, meaning frequent and sometimes strong earthquakes can be a common occurence.

The Loyalty Islands are a tourists hotspot and a favourite for scuba divers.

They are known for their stunning natural beauty and crystal clear waters – perfect conditions for diving.

The Ring of Fire is home to 452 volcanoes, more than 75 percent of the world’s active volcanoes and witnesses around 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes.
