NEW Fortnite in-game tournaments: How to play free public tournaments on PS4, Xbox, Switch

’s new in-game tournaments are free and open to everyone, offering players a chance to compete for “prizes and glory”.

Each of the tournaments has a scheduled list of dates and times when the competitive mode is live to play.

Every time you join a tournament, the slate is wiped completely clean, meaning everyone starts from scratch with the same score.

It is then up to you to compete over several hours of intense gameplay to climb the ranks and eliminate your opponents.

Epic Games teased: “Tournaments will feature a target score to strive towards – reaching this score will award you with a shiny pin celebrating your accomplishment.

“In the future, earning a pin may advance you to the next round of a tournament or qualify you to win prizes.”

Matchmaking during the tournaments will pair opponents of similar ranks for a smoother gameplay.

However, depending on your in-game skill-level, you might find yourself matched with progressively stronger opponents.

On the flip-side, if you are struggling, the tournament sessions should lower the bar a bit to make it easier to move forward.

How to play Fortnite’s in-game tournaments on PS4, Xbox and Switch?

Epic Games will not be separating payers across different platforms, meaning players armed with controllers will be pitted against players with keyboards and mice.

This also applies to mobile players accustomed to touch controls on their phones and tablets.

Just remember to opt-in for cross-platform play if you want to compete in the tournaments.

Epic Games said: “We’ve been observing the performance of controller players in our Summer Skirmish, PAX West, and Fall Skirmish tournaments while playing against mouse and keyboard players at the highest levels of competition.

“Competitors such as NickMercs, Ayden, KamoLRF, and AmarCoD have shown that controller players can be successful while competing against some of the best PC players in the world.”

Epic Games pledged to “assess” this during the 2019 competitive season to further refine the tournament mode in the future.

The game devs hope this will shine a light “onto the world’s best players, increasing prize pools and player exposure from our competitions.”
