Mate 20 Pro release, UK price, full specs and the features that beat its Android rivals

After weeks of rumours, leaks and anticipation the all-new Mate 20 Pro has just been revealed by Huawei.

The Chinese smartphone firm unveiled its latest and greatest device at an event in London with it coming packed with some very exciting new upgrades and features.

The Mate 20 Pro now sits top of the pile when it comes to Huawei’s long list of phones and fans of this brand are set to be treated some big new additions.

From the outside, the Pro looks pretty sensational with its Galaxy S9-style design including a 6.4-inch curved OLED HDR display.

Other than a small notch at the top, this screen covers almost the entire front of the device with a high screen to body ratio and Ultra Narrow Bezels.

Spin the Mate 20 around and you’ll find an all-glass back with a very unique camera system placed in the centre of the phone.

Unlike the P20 Pro, this triple snapper sits in a square pattern and offers numerous photographic treats including a 20-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, a telephoto lens and a 40-megapixel main sensor.

There’s also a dual true tone flash which Huawei promises will help improve night shots taken on the phone.

Like most of Huawei’s new smartphones, the Mate 20 features its AI software which helps the camera switch to the perfect settings depending on what you are trying to shoot.

These include animals, food, sunsets and people.

And Super HDR technology allows the phone to take 10 frames simultaneously and composes them for the ultimate photo.

One final new feature of the Pro’s camera is the ability to film a subject in full colour whilst the background is turned to black and white.

Express.co.uk has been lucky enough to see this action and it actually works incredibly well and could be a very popular addition to this phone.

If it’s selfies you love then you’ll find a 3D camera on the front of the phone which improves images along with being able to be used as a way to unlock the device and pay for products at the till.

Under the glass case, you’ll also find some big upgrades with the Mate 20 Pro featuring the new Kirin 980 chipset.

This processor was revealed at the IFA technology show in August with Huawei CEO, Richard Yu, saying: “Last year, we showed the world the potential of On-Device AI with the Kirin 970, and this year, we’ve designed an all-round powerhouse that not only features outstanding AI capabilities, but also brings cutting-edge raw performance to consumers.

“Equipped with all-new CPU, GPU and Dual NPU, the Kirin 980 is the ultimate engine to power next-generation productivity and entertainment applications.”

This new powerhouse should mean apps launch 50 percent faster and the whole system should be around 47 percent more responsive.

Along with those much-improved brains, the Mate 20 Pro comes with a giant 4,200mAh battery – which is one of the biggest ever seen in a phone.

Not only does this battery give the device a two-day life but it also has one very clever trick up its sleeve.

Huawei has finally included wireless charging on the new Mate but this phone can also be used to refill other phones using something called Wireless Reverse Charging.

If the Mate runs flat it can also be boosted in super quick time via the new Huawei supercharger which can get 70 percent back in the battery in just 30 minutes.

Other bonus extras on the device include a water-resistant design, an in-screen fingerprint scanner, facial recognition and a hyper optical pattern which makes it much less slippy in your hand and stops it from getting covered in fingerprints.

The Mate 20 Pro arrives in five colours including Midnight Blue, Emerald Green, Twilight, Black and Pink Gold.

It will ship with the latest Android 9 Pie operating system.

Huawei is still announcing full release date and pricing but we will update this article as soon as we hear more.
