Spain vs England: Express Sport brings you LIVE Nations League updates from Seville

SPAIN 0-0 ENGLAND

Spain XI: De Gea, Jonny, Ramos, Nacho, Marcos Alonso, Thiago, Busquets, Saul, Aspas, Asensio, Rodrigo

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Gomez, Maguire, Chilwell, Winks, Dier, Barkley, Sterling, Kane, Rashford

  • Harry Winks, Joe Gomez and Kieran Trippier start
  • Marcos Alonso shot cleared off the line

SPAIN 0-0 ENGLAND

10: It’s been raining all day long, and if the opening 10 minutes is anything to go by – it’s going to rain goals too. Breathless stuff.

8: England launch an attack of their own with Harry Kane busting a gut to connect with a Trippier cross but he’s penalised for pushing Ramos.

5: Ah, this isn’t looking great folks. England are under the cost with Spain relentlessly driving forward. I’ve no idea how they haven’t converted one of these chances.

Jonny sees his initial angled cross thumped wide by Busquets via a deflection. Sergio Ramos connects with the coirner and flicks towards the back post. Marcos Alonso was there to produce a half-volley that somehow Jordan Pickford parried off the line. I think it came of the Everton goalkeeper’s back?!

3: Why hasn’t Harry Winks got the squad number 40? I’ll see myself out.

Interesting start here with England seeing more of the ball – but looking rather nervous in possession. A flat Joe Gomez pass across midfield was picked up by Saul but he couldn’t thread it through to Rodrigo.

SPAIN 0-0 ENGLAND

1: Whoosh! Now those were a couple of national anthems. Plenty of boos and hisses during God Save the Queen, likewise for Marcha Real. Quite a spicy atmosphere here – perhaps something to do with last night’s events in Seville. Anyway, we’re underway!

The villain

19:40: How could I forget to mention the man, myth and pantomime villain legend Sergio Ramos?!

Ramos is expecting a tough night against England and pinpointed star striker Harry Kane as player that could thrive in LaLiga.

“Well, we know that their level of difficulty is very high, it’s incredible,” Ramos said. “We know we have got a fantastic national team in front of us in England.

“Even though we played a great game I thought at Wembley, there’s always things you can improve and tomorrow we have another opportunity to do this, to do a great game against players of fantastic, highest level.

“They were semi-finalists, with a lot of personality despite being a very young national team. They have got very great virtues. Offensively they’re very dangerous.

“Harry Kane, we hope he has… well, we are going to try to keep his scoring drought going because that would be a good sign for us.”

Helluva atmosphere

19:35: There’s no point in comparing the atmosphere with Friday’s eerie behind closed doors clash against Croatia. It was just the most surreal experience. I would have suggested a few sound affects from the PA system.

No such thing needed tonight. Supporters are fired up for this one.

Adam Lallana – they key?

19:30: I’ll be interested to hear what you guys think about this. Jordan Henderson believes the answer to England’s creative conundrum in midfield lies in the form of experienced Adam Lallana.

“Probably the biggest one that I’d look at as that type of player is Adam Lallana, who obviously is a big part of Liverpool and England,” Henderson said. “We have missed him in the sense of what he brings to the team.

“In terms of his work ethic and the stats he is producing, it’s as if he is 25. Age is not really a big factor for me. Adam is fit enough to go and play for as long as he wants.”

Is Mr Henderson right? Let me know what you think on Twitter using the hashtag ExpressSport or commenting at the bottom of the page.

‘It’s a big task’

19:20: Well that’s an understatement, Gareth. The England boss has been speaking with Sky Sports ahead of kick off and here’s what he had to say.

“We have some outstanding attacking talents and we need to get good service into them, be brave enough to come here and play. Our approach is one of resilience and toughness, we know we will have to defend at times,” England manager Gareth Southgate said.

“Everybody can see the way Spain have started this season, it is a big task but what a challenge for us. Harry Winks has shown he can play against top-class opposition before.”

Twitter round-up

Phillip: One of the worst England starting XI’s ever! How young? Spain will give us a lesson tonight. Will struggle to get in the game. Three-nil minimum.

Peter: I hate to be a killjoy but that England midfield looks totally disjointed to me – I admire Southgate for giving young players a chance but I have to shake my head at his team selection AGAIN – he seems to be absolutely clueless.

Kyle: With the form of Sancho I’m disappointed not to see him start tonight. With his blistering pace and skill he could have caused Spain loads of problems tonight from the start. Plus, he’s in form!

What happened to “Southgate you’re the one,” guys?! So fickle.

The opposition

19:10: Should you wish to skip over this entire update – I’m basically going to praise Luis Enrique’s side for bouncing back after their terrible World Cup.

Spain’s possession game was the envy of international football as midfield maestros Xavi and Andres Iniesta helped them to two European titles and a World Cup triumph between 2008 and 2014.

But Spain have been more direct and aggressive under Enrique, with the emphasis on creativity rather than simply possession for possession’s sake. Enrique wants players to be fluid, to move the ball quickly and free runners into space.

Enrique’s two competitive games in charge have seen Spain set the new Nations League alight.

Spain beat England 2-1 at Wembley with Saul Niguez and Rodrigo turning around an early deficit, while World Cup finalists Croatia were hammered 6-0 in Elche, before easily disposing of Wales 4-1 in a friendly on Thursday.

Not good

19:05: The FA strongly condemned violent disturbances in Seville yesterday and have vowed to sanction any supporter found to be responsible.

Around 3,000 fans have travelled to the southern Spanish city for the match. Video footage on social media appeared to show large groups brandishing tables and chairs on one of Seville’s main shopping streets. Some were also shown vandalising cars.

Riot police were forced to intervene to disperse the crowds. There were no reports of any arrests or serious injuries.

“We condemn the unacceptable behaviour witnessed in Seville. With the Spain fixture still to come on Monday night, we urge those following the team to respect our hosts and act in a responsible manner,” an FA spokesperson said.

“The FA will work in partnership with the UK Football Policing Unit to help identify those involved and we will sanction any England Supporters’ Travel Club member found to be responsible for disorder.”

Twitter round-up

Daryl Wing: England have a lot to prove this evening. They can’t undo all the good work in Russia. Nothing less than a draw will do, and Sterling needs to score or grab an assist.

Steve: Raheem Sterling starts? How is that possible? Does he have something incriminating on Gareth Southgate? So much for picking form players!

Hugh: Don’t want to seem negative, but a score less than FIVE—NIL against that Spanish team would be acceptable. Do England have a hope in hell?

Oh you don’t sound negative, Hugh. A real positive Percy if you ask me!

Eight changes

18:53: Just the eight changes for Luis Enrique… just the eight from a side that thrashed Wales 4-1.

I think it’s fair to say that they have a decent amount of strength in depth. Anyway, David de Gea, Sergio Ramos and Saul Niguez are the only survivors.

Wolves’ Jonny makes his full debut, while Valencia striker Rodrigo leads the line with Alvaro Morata dropped to the bench. I can’t understand why…

Hat-trick of changes

18:50: No real surprises in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI with three changes from the side who drew 0-0 with Croatia on Friday.

The suspended John Stones and Jordan Henderson have been replaced by Joe Gomez and Harry Winks. There’s also a started for World Cup semi-final scorer Kieran Trippier – he’s in for Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker.

Goals have been a real problem for the Three Lions, and Southgate will be hopeful that Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling and captain Harry Kane can take care of business.

The line-ups

18:45: I know I should be focusing on the England team but I can’t get over Jonny, of Wolves, is starting at right-back for Spain tonight. That puts him ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta! Full team news and analysis coming up.

Spain XI: De Gea, Jonny, Ramos, Nacho, Marcos Alonso, Thiago, Busquets, Saul, Aspas, Asensio, Rodrigo.

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Gomez, Maguire, Chilwell, Winks, Dier, Barkley, Sterling, Kane, Rashford.

Subs: Butland, Bettinelli, Walker, Alexander-Arnold, Dunk, Chalobah, Mount, Maddison, Sancho

Enrique’s evolution

18:40: Luis Enrique was appointed as Spain manager following a disappointing World Cup which began with previous boss Julen Lopetegui sacked on the eve of the competition.

With a new generation of players now having to be blended with the experienced names, former Barcelona boss Enrique has started well.

A 2-1 win at Wembley in the reverse Nations League fixture last month got the ball rolling before Spain thumped Croatia 6-0 three days later – Wales were the next victims, beaten 4-1 in a friendly last week.

Banned aid

18:35: Facing Spain in Seville was always going to be a challenge for England, but it is a test made more difficult by the fact both John Stones and Jordan Henderson are suspended.

The pair were shown yellow cards in the draw in Rijeka to add to their bookings in the opening Group A4 loss to Spain at Wembley and, as a result, will miss the return fixture.

With no further call-ups expected, it remains to be seen how Southgate fills the considerable void left by two of his most trusted players. I suspect Harry Winks will be thrown into the deep end.

It’s raining.

18:30: I didn’t know what else to headline this update – because it’s simply lashed it down all day long.

Heavy rain lashed Seville ahead of England’s Nations League clash with Spain.

The city came to a virtual standstill as a storm hit during the afternoon, soaking the Estadio Benito Villamarin.

Some 3,000 England supporters are expected at the home of Real Betis to cheer on the Three Lions, although the stadium is largely uncovered.

Twitter round-up

Sam: All this talk about England not having any ball-playing midfielders, what about Shelvey? Been excellent for Newcastle over the last 18 months and has an excellent range of passing. Very underrated.

Gerry: If Gareth Southgate cares so much about player burn-out, why is our only world class striker Harry Kane not being rested in these Mickey mouse fixtures?!

Jason: Proper UK weather in Seville. Might level the playing field so to speak.

Ahh yes, the weather. I’ll be getting to that in just a moment Jason. Don’t steal my thunder. Literally…

Relegation…

18:20: We barely understood what the heck this competition was a few months ago – and now we’re facing the indignity of relegation!

England are without a win from their two Nations League matches to date, Friday’s stalemate in Croatia preceded by a 2-1 defeat at home to Spain last month.

With groups settled on a head-to-head basis if teams finish on equal points and Spain the favourites to progress, even a draw in Seville could be the difference between England remaining amongst the Group A elite for the 2020/21 edition.

While the Nations League has been derided by some, most notably Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, Southgate will be keen not to become the first England boss to suffer the ignominy of relegation.

Evening…

18:15: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Spain vs England in Seville.

5,609 days. That’s the number of days since Spain lost a competitive fixture on home soil.

11,552 days. That is the number of days since England won away in Spain.

The sum of my findings? It doesn’t look good for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions, who are winless in their past four competitive matches.

What a tremendously bleak introduction that was…

Perhaps I have too much respect for Luis Enrique’s side. Or perhaps I’m still throwing my toys out of the pram because I drew the short straw and have to watch the game in a cold, wet and dreary London.

Who knows, eh? Anyway, let’s have the team news and line-ups.

SPAIN vs ENGLAND

Gareth Southgate’s England squad trained at Ciudad Deportiva Luis Del Sol – the training base of Real Betis – ahead of tonight’s Group A4 encounter.

The Three Lions boss has lost Luke Shaw, James Tarkowski, Danny Rose, Danny Welbeck and Alex McCarthy from his original selection through injury, while John Stones and Jordan Henderson are suspended.

Both travelled with the squad from Croatia to Spain. Stones has since returned to the UK, while Henderson has stayed out as his family had already booked travel and there was a leadership meeting on Sunday.
