Republic of Ireland team news: Predicted Nations League line up vs Wales – O’Dowda out

Callum O’Dowda has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s Nations League match against Wales after suffering dizzy spells against Denmark on Saturday.

The Bristol City midfielder was replaced at half-time during the 0-0 draw after complaining of feeling unwell and will not be risked against Ryan Giggs’ men.

Republic boss Martin O’Neill has called up Portsmouth striker Ronan Curtis into his squad, although Callum Robinson is expected to start after impressing from the bench against the Danes.

Speaking about O’Dowda, O’Neill said: “He is out of the game tomorrow night, precautionary as much as anything else.

“He wasn’t feeling great at half-time, but he can’t remember when it actually happened during the course of the game – we are trying to find out ourselves – so the best thing to do was to take him off, take him out of it and then any sort of reaction.

“It would be too early to consider him for tomorrow night.”

Ireland fielded wing-backs and three central defenders in a defensive performance that stifled Denmark, but a more attacking display is expected against Wales.

Shane Long was a doubt ahead of the match on Saturday but was fit enough to start and should lead the line again.

However, striker Shane Hogan is an alternative if O’Neill looks to rest the Southampton ace.

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty is expected to continue at right wing-back but Cyrus Christie should start in central midfield againafter shining in the unfamiliar role last time out.

James McClean is likely to start on the left flank if the Boys in Green stick with their 5-3-1-1 formation, while Jeff Hendrick will play off the frontman.

O’Neill’s men currently have just a single point from their two Nations League fixtures and will be looking to avenge a 4-1 reverse at the hands of Wales back in September.
